1979 Airstream?

My husband knows a couple who has a 79 airstream and is looking to downsize. We have 4 children and a popup that is only 2 yrs. old. We are looking to upgrade. We will know in the next couple of months if they want to trade. If so we will be the owners of an airstream that needs some work. We will need to add bunks, remove carpet, replace curtains. get rid of a moldy smell and who knows what else. But we will enjoy doing it I'm sure. I have already enjoyed reading the forums and looking at all of your pictures. Glad to be part of such a wonderful place.

If you get the Argosy I hope you will have as much fun making it your own and we have had. You might check your VIN# to see the length of your Argosy. They were usually listed in the even numbers like 20',22',24'28' and 30'. I suspect you have a 28ft.

Advice of the expensive kind I can give you.

Many of the vintage units (In fact all) have leaks. These leaks are usually around the perimeter and have soaked or rotted out the wood along the edge. This is a time consuming and expensive process to repair (Something you may not want to have to deal with immediately after getting it). Take a thin screwdriver with you or an ice pick, and press it down on the floor along the perimeter. I have been (HAD) several times, and have paid extensively for it with $$$ and heartache.

I do not wan't to discourage you, after repairs (IF NEEDED) the Airstream will be excellent for you. I would consider keeping the popup for the time until the Airstream is repaird and ready to go.

You will find lots of information here on the forum. Take your time and research as much as you can.

You will need to be aware of checking to see if the axle(s) are in good shape, brakes, tires, floor etc..... The vintage Airstreams are awesome. With a little time and TLC, they can be brought back to safe and fun homes on the road.
