1962 Tradewind. 2 days in and already in trouble!

I've been dying to have an Airstream for years, so when I finally saw one advertised a state over I had to jump!

My main concern was getting one with a solid body, but after gutting the Silver Bullet this weekend, it turns out the frame is going to be a massive challenge.

I live out on Nantucket, where living or sleeping in trailers and RV's is against the law, so I plan to use this as an office space in my driveway with plug in power from my house and no plumbing.

I began the gutting process this weekend, with day one going great. Got the entire interior out, with just the tub and toilet to deal with on day two.

Unfortunately, after pulling out the front section of floor, a very rusty frame is showing, so a full body off restoration appears needed to make it go back together properly.

I'm off to reread a bunch of previous posts on this great site.

Wish me luck and welcome any input

-Scott

Welcome from Colorado:

Me thinks you have too many rules in Nantucket. Illegal to spend the night, okay to spend the day in the RV. Strange. Hope your neighbors don't mind a shell off trailer project in your front yard. There is probably a rule against that too.

I strongly recommend you rebuild your trailer to "travel ready" status. An Airstream with no plumbing isn't worth very much. People buy Airstreams for traveling. It becomes an expensive yard ornament if you can't travel in it. But, your trailer, your rules.

These old trailers require a lot of renovation. A frame with surface rust isn't necessarily bad. Continue your assessment of this old trailer's needs and then decide on the rebuild plan. You will likely need a new axle assembly, repaired frame, new subfloor and while you're at it, new wiring, plumbing and appliances. With the interior skins off you can re insulate it and seal the seams. Don't forget to rebuild the windows and doors. You can save money as you won't need a bed for now. Heck, $15k in parts and 1500 hours labor you will have a day trailer. Start a project thread and fellow Trade Wind enthusiasts will join in and help.

Your photos of the Trade Wind make the project look promising. You are well served in reading renovation threads here on these Forums.

Oh my, you certainly have big project on your hands. I am sure you are in full compliance of all zoning laws, hope so. You won’t be complaining about not having anything to do for a long time. Lots of luck and please post updates when you ha e time.
