Tank Sizes

:b ash:Why does Airstream put such large black water tanks in their trailers? Also, why is the grey water tank so much smaller than the fresh water tank?

Seams like a poor design to me.

No Problem Here

My ASCL has a 54 gallon white tank, 37 gallon grey tank and a 39 gallon black tank. With the grey and black tanks totaling 76 gallons, it allows for all of the white water to be emptied into the two tanks if "equalization" of the grey tank into the black tank is used; thus I don't see that the white water tank to too large or the grey and black tanks too small; actually they seem to be just right.

Is there a way to use some of the black tank for grey water when the grey water tank is full?

Manually. Catch sink water in a pot and pour it into the toilet.

Use a dishpan in the sink and pour it down the toilet.

Vince,

I also have a 2010 30' Classic.

Everyone's situation is different. I have found the large black water tank to be helpful in situations where I am boondocking and hauling wastewater away. Waste tends to accumulate in the blackwater tank in such situations. One year I was on the last day of a 15 day stay when the tank was finally full.

It is my experience that with typical usage the greywater tank is not full when the fresh water tank is empty, since some water is used by the toilet and some is consumed for drinking and cooking.

Only indirectly.

Having the gray go directly to the black water tank, allows the bacteria to go into the gray water piping.

Bad, SUPER BAD idea.
