Not a good week for the Airstream

Thats probably not true, but more stuff broke this week than all last summer.

A bolt fell out of the steps and is now rattling around behind a riveted panel. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I broke the awning at 2:00 AM putting it away in a windstorm. Just this little part here, I just have to figure out where to get one.

And finally, when I got home, I found the bracket on the kitchen counter extension broke. I have this recollection of reading something about that bracket on this forum but I don't have any idea how to look it up. If there is something smarter than just replacing it with an OEM part, please let me know.

Thanks
Brad

Well they say things happens in three's. Our bracket was knocked off the kitchen counter extension. Repaired with toothpicks and a lager screw. Waiting for the for then next two things to break. At less you got it all at once.

The awning part can be ordered from Zip Dee. It is called the claw, I carry extras, and also order the assembly as it is easier to replace. When ordering the parts, consider the door roller and the "lift handles.

Page 5 here shows the upgraded bracket. Mine has been on for some time now and is FAR superior to the original.

can you either reach the bolt with a magnet on a flex rod or pull it to where you can get it?(good magnet on outside of panel and slide it along) If you have trouble getting the end fitting for the awning, I made one by welding a new blank piece and filing the slot, works fine......Phil.

If I can recover the bolt, how do I reinstall it without removing the riveted panel to the right of the steps?

Getting closer now. I have the shelf bracket figured out, but I have not done it yet.

Is this a Bright Claw or a Satin Claw?

Claw from Zip Dee

Having just read your post about the broken claw and then seeing the follow up about Zip Dee parts - and knowing I had the exact same issue - I took it upon myself to call Zip Dee. Here's what happened:

1. I called 800-338-2378

2. operator answered

3. I asked for parts

4. a gentleman in parts picked up

5. i explained i had a broken claw

6. he asked for model of Airstream

7. he then explained he can ship the claw + the arm its on - already pre-installed/attached

8. i gave credit card and shipping info

9. cost: $23 for part + 5$ for shipping --

10. Seems pretty awesome.

Awesome and thanks for the info! Sounds like a good spare to have aboard.

I also carry an extra claw. While bookdocking in Maine as you did in a wind storm it broke off. Had to hold the awning in place with DucTape for another 1,500 miles, actually worked great.

On my trailer there is a riveted panel in the belly that can be taken out to access the nut for the step bolt. I need to tighten mine and that is the only way I see into it. But it looks like what Airstream intended for access. Not a big deal to drill it out and replace. In my case the PVC container for the dump hose is riveted across the access panel. I am waiting for a dry day to do it.

Two claws have been ordered so I will have a spare.

The scary project was the front steps and they have been fixed for free.

This collared bold fell out of the right hand side of the steps with no easy way to retrieve it.

So I cut this hole from the bottom in the black panel to the right of the steps.

Found the bolt and returned it to its proper place and then patched the hole.

You can't see it unless you crawl under there.

Now I just have to order the counter brackets.

Good work, Brad/Bbelk! All is solved and other suggestions are now available here from helpful forum members, too.

I love this forum!
