Done.

Well we returned from picking up our trailer at Colonial yesterday after completion of a panel replacement and a few other issues, including the counter extension brackets. Again, the guys at Colonial were great, very accommodating, and went the extra mile to ensure things were right. Many kudos and two thumbs up. Here are the pics, enjoy:

This first one from the side shows the very different wooden blocks to which the new brackets attach. They are a bit shorter (you can see where the old blocks were), but are probably three times as thick.

The new brackets are spring-loaded and lock into place when the counter is lifted high enough. Then lift again and pull the supports to lower. They seem a lot sturdier, but only time will tell. Let me know if there are any questions.

I apparently broke some of my Photobucket links when I reorganized one of my folders. Since I cannot edit my original post, here are the original pics of the broken brackets for posterity.

Both my brackets broke after about 1 year. Had each welded...for about $3 each. Still working fine after two years. We'll see. Seems much stronger at the weld than original.

Wow, didn't think that was possible. The original bracket metal is so cheap and flimsy, it seems like it would not hold a weld very well.

Post pics of this fix when you get the chance. Thanks.

Preemptive Strike

As related earlier, my drop down counter brackets broke. Some of you have found the new style brackets and others have gone back with the old. I tried a couple places, (Inland and Out of Doors Mart) and there was much confusion regarding the new brackets, and I ended up getting the old style. They are easy to put in, but I didn't like the idea of them breaking again while we are on the road so here is my solution. I have no idea if this will work.

Here is how they break:

So on my new, unbroken brackets, I took some tape:

and some JB Weld:

Filed off the rough edges:

and created a fillet spanning the corner where they seem to break. I will install them this way and hopefully forget about them. If it breaks, I will post it here.

Great idea. I have actually tried this on other things for reinforcement, but not with these brakets. Definitely keep us posted.
