Folding Shelf Brackets

I replaced my hinges with folding shelf brackets from Rockler Woodworking.
Here is the link to the hinge. Unfortunately the price has doubled since I purchased mine several years ago.

Good Point.

Thanks for the post. I'm thinking 750 Lbs capacity ought to be enough to take the shock of the highway potholes.

Here are the same ones at a few pennies less.

Well, I guess AS isn't too far out on price, based on the prior posts.

Here is a pair that I am considering. They cost even more although shipping is free. Stainless steel sounds like a good idea.

Think I am going to try the Airstream ones first. But again, my trailer still being under warranty plays a big part in that. Good finds though. May need them yet.

OK, had to run out to the storage lot. I always forget something when putting her away for the winter. Anyway, got some photos of the old setup with some dimensions. Will have to wait till new brackets get here to verify, but I think, if you don't use an additional block, like the Colonial RV photos in the upthread post, the new brackets will be very visible when the extension is down. IIRC, that is the setup in my brother-in-law's 2012 Classic. Anyway use these in the meantime.

Thanks for the posting the pictures. It certainly seems like something needs to be added to the strips of wood on the cabinet side to make up for the lack of the Horizontal extension piece on the top of the old brackets(where the breaks occur).

I think I'm going to let you figure this out before I order anything.

Headed to Colonial for an appointment on Monday. I'll post the results regarding how they choose to fix the counter extension. More to follow.

I just found this thread, and had the same problem with metal fatigue breaks/cracks on the OEM brackets while I was in NM a couple of months ago.
I fixed the problem by buying the same bracket AS used in 2010 at Camping World. I think I paid about $7.00 for 2 brackets.
What I noticed is that I had to make new holes where the brackets attached to both the shelf and cabinet even though the holes in the metal brackets matched up perfectly.
Here is what I believe happened at the plant when they install the shelves:
It's installed as "close enough" then when the shelf does not line up correctly, it is pushed and pulled and brackets are bent to make it fit and causes the metal brackets to flex into shape eventually crack where it was bent.
Of course I took my time and installed it correctly with no fudging and bending of the brackets. Drilled all new holes and used correct sized screws.
Although, I don't know it this will make a difference while still using the OEM style brackets. The only way to prove my point is to travel and use the shelf as before for a couple of years and see if the same thing happens again.
Stay tuned, I'll let you know in 2015.

My trailer is a 2010, and one of my brackets broke on a very bumpy highway. I would be interested in a picture of the ones you bought, if available.

Sure thing. I bought 2 sets at the same time so I probably have a package to show. I can't get to my stuff till the weekend and I'll look for them.
They look just like the ones displayed in post 47.

Don't bother. Those are what I have. My first approach has been to replace the old with ones of the same type. That will keep me going until I have to drive thought western Arizona on I-40 again. I wish they would get some of those illegal immigrants they are always complaining about to fix that road.

Sounds like we both took the same approach.

UPDATE:

Very successful trip to Colonial. I will tell you that the standard party line from Airstream (not Colonial) is that they replace the broken brackets with the same... no part numbers have changed. However, being the adamant person I am, and the reasonable service folks Colonial employ, I talked and they listened. We opened a couple of new trailers and saw the new brackets and they went to work researching the upgrade. Come to find out, these new brackets offer an 88 pound support rating (not sure how that's measured though), and Airstream would warranty my broken brackets with the updated ones.

The only problem is that they weren't in stock AND they also require extra wood. Thus, no pics of the fix yet. We're probably going to have them do a little body work to the trailer soon (thank you Mr. 4 Point Buck) and will have them do the bracket install then as well.

It may be a few weeks, but I will post pics of the fix. Also to their credit, Colonial did replace my broken brackets with some of the same until this upgraded fix can be applied.

All in all, great visit, but more to follow.

For those of you who have had their counter top extension hinge break, I finally fixed my problem after the second one broke. I took it down to my local welding shop and had them re-enforce it by welding supports in the 90 degree corners of the hinge where it broke both times. Problem solved.

Done.

Well we returned from picking up our trailer at Colonial yesterday after completion of a panel replacement and a few other issues, including the counter extension brackets. Again, the guys at Colonial were great, very accommodating, and went the extra mile to ensure things were right. Many kudos and two thumbs up. Here are the pics, enjoy:

This first one from the side shows the very different wooden blocks to which the new brackets attach. They are a bit shorter (you can see where the old blocks were), but are probably three times as thick.

The new brackets are spring-loaded and lock into place when the counter is lifted high enough. Then lift again and pull the supports to lower. They seem a lot sturdier, but only time will tell. Let me know if there are any questions.

I apparently broke some of my Photobucket links when I reorganized one of my folders. Since I cannot edit my original post, here are the original pics of the broken brackets for posterity.

Both my brackets broke after about 1 year. Had each welded...for about $3 each. Still working fine after two years. We'll see. Seems much stronger at the weld than original.

Wow, didn't think that was possible. The original bracket metal is so cheap and flimsy, it seems like it would not hold a weld very well.

Post pics of this fix when you get the chance. Thanks.
