Airstream Wants to know- 2006 Classic

You all have seen the thread about my recent water pump problem. I wwent to the local dealer yesterday. I have had dealing with them before and not what I would call positive ones. I went to the service dept and told them my problem. They asked my unit number. I told them. I asked them if they had the part in stock. Then they proceeded to tell me they had no way to look up the part number. Claiming it could be one of a number of different pumps. I would need to get the part number for them. I told them if got that far I was going to pull the pump myself. They also told me I could be get in for service until May 25th. I told them I was living in the trailer. That did not seem to matter.

Well after I left the Dealer, Bozo's RV and Marine, the name has been changed to protect the guilty. I called Airstream. Talked with Dick in the service dept. I told him my problem with the pump and the dealer. He told me exactly what the pump make and model number. I suspect he could have told me the serial number if I had asked. I also told him the problem with the Dealer. he said they wanted to know about things like this and would fill out a report and send it to the appropriate people.

Airstream wants to know the facts if you are having bad experiences with dealers. Give them a call 937-596-6111 and ask for service or write them a letter. 419 West Pike Street, P.O. Box 629, Jackson Center, Oh 45334-0629.
They would apprciate haering about the outstanding ones as well.

Way to go!

Reminds me of the movie quote of all time.

When My husband has problems with folks he just kills me on what he does. He calls them up and ask to speak to Larry, Curly, or Moe whom ever is in charge. You would be surprised how it works.

sorry to hear it...

Sandi,

sorry to hear about you experience with local stealer...err...dealer.

Good for you for taking it up with Airstream directly, I'm still trying to put a civil pen to paper and write about our experience there.

I hope you get things figured out.

cheers,
brad.

Becky,
Oh I have to save that one. Too funny! I'm one of those folks who doesn't think of what to say until 3 or 4 days later...
I remember grandma, when getting poor or awful customer service, would very sweetly say, "oh, young lady (or young man), I'm sorry, don't you like your job?" man you should have seen how they would change their attitudes.
Wish I was on the ball like dear old grandma...

Most Airstreams tow better while on the ground...
Seriously, let us know how the water pump install (I am guessing you are having to do this on your own) turns out.

Flying Airstreams

Well it is aluminum and aerodynamic. Can't hurt to try.
I will be doing it on my own. I beleive if I take it into the local airstream delaer I will end up with more problems than I have now. a sum total of one. They could not guarentee me they would have my trailer back to me by the end of the day and could not tell me if they have the part. The dealer in Spokane was quite helpful. It is a three hour drive but the car needs some exercise.

Michelle,
You will enjoy dealing with Nick and crew at Airstream Spokane. They are a rarity in the "vehicle" business!!

Cheers, Jeff

Ed,
Thanks for the karma, I have heard him do this and it's amazing how things change. The bad thing is when Larry actually works there.

Hi BradK.
I notice you live in Calgary and you appear to have purchased your Airstream in the States. I am thinking of doing the same.
How difficult was it through the border and what documentation is necessary?
Any help you can give would be great.
Thanks a bunch.
Howard.

Hi Howard and howdy neighbor,

It was very easy at the border, most of the customs people just want to see inside for their own interest.

- You will have to pay GST on the trailer but not duty at the border. You can pay with credit card, so take the airmiles on that one. They should give you an exemption of some degree.

- You also have to pay a 209.00 fee for the Registrar of Imported Vehicles at that time as well. They will fax a form to the registrar (make sure they have your address correct to avoid major headaches!!! That's a whole different story in itself). The registrar will send you what's called a "form 2" which you must take along with a letter from Airstream stating that there are no outstanding recalls on the unit. (make sure your dealer or Airstream direct gets you this). You then have to take the trailer to a Canadian Tire store to have an inspection done which takes about 10 minutes. This needs to be done approximately 4 weeks from the time you receive the form 2.

- At the border, you must have the sales invoice, deed, etc, etc. Make sure you ask the dealer to have the documentation ready for you.

- We ordered a CSA spec model Airstream so that there would be no retrofitting involved. From the inspection, I can't see that anything would need to be changed from the RVIA spec to CSA spec though.

- If you do buy in the states, choose your dealer wisely and avoid Missoula at all costs. Trust me on this one. If you purchase from a private party, make sure you have an inspection done.

Let me know if you need help and good luck with the search!

brad.
