For the 2012 model year and after, Airstream began installing a seal between the body shell and rear bumper storage plate. Prior to that simple seal inclusion, water intrusion through that interface was a huge problem damaging the plywood floors in the rear of many Airstreams, sometimes within a couple of years.
Apparently some Airstreams from that period have not been affected, and some have been sealed by owners to prevent it. Look for wet or rotted plywood under the vinyl subfloor at the rear of the trailer. Hints: The vinyl may be discolored. The screw threads holding the base trim at the rear will be rusty, not shiny and bright, if unscrewed. The floor may be uneven or soft. The subfloor may register wet if probed with a moisture detection meter.
