We're BAAAAACK!! new project - '65 Overlander

The last 3 years we've been swamped with our move to our new (1910) house getting things how we want it. Our 63 safari, 8671 has been in use by us quite a bit in the region, but I stumbled on a craigslist ad for a trailer about 45 minutes from us and picked it up for a song, but it was vandalized.

My goal ASAP is to get it dry.

Graffiti has been stripped, for the most part anyway, and the boards are off the windows so I could measure for glass. The interior is unpainted, and in great shape. I've done investigation behind the bathroom, in the cabinets etc and haven't found rotten wood (yet). appliances are complete except maybe a few shelves in the fridge, has a floor furnace and wall furnace. It has an odd unit in the front window with removable plates and some grates for air intake, original TV antenna etc. I need help though.

I'm getting glass cut, but one sash is gone, the one by the main entrance.

HEHR-L 1299 11322 - Anyone have one? I've left a message for silver trailer supply, but getting all the feelers out there.

While I'm looking I'm also looking for an international side emblem. I'm not sure on this door knob, it needs to be gone through, isn't working quite right but appears original.

I'm going to order a new roof vent (probably fantastic fan) for the rear and a astrodome for the front. My goal is to get it weather tight this weekend then start the process of cleaning the interior out and assessing what it needs.

Has an odd step attachment. I think this was well cared for until the last 10 years then sat out and windows were broken recently, thankfully in a desert region where we see very very little rain.

More pictures to follow.

and more

So the list continues:

1 window sash
1 international script
1 compartment door

ordering from VTS astrodome, rear vent, stove vent, fridge vent, and all my glazing stuff for glass.

Any help on those used parts are really appreciated!

What a great place to start! You'll have that in great shape in no time!

I look forward to seeing the progress you make with this one.

Interesting floor furnace in the bedroom area.

I must say it's probably the dirtiest, but most complete project we've ever purchased.

Wow! A floor furnace?!?!

If no kids or pets are afoot (either can be trained), I'd clean that up and use it!

Today was the first day back for me at work, so I had far less time than I wanted to but I did manage to remove all the glazing strips, broken glass and glazing tape from the 8 window frames that need glass that I have. I also figured out I think I can cannibalize a bigger hehr window to have it cut down and made into my missing sash but it's complete and I really hope to find someone with the window I need.

airstreamsupply.com has a repro without the latch clips for $225 but I'd still have to rip apart my window just to get the clips out. They list the official measurement as 21 3/4 Hx 18 5/16W. That will fit inside the opening I have, and gives me a reasonable idea on tolerances if their numbers are indeed correct.

Can any 65 overlander owners with the mid twin confirm that measurement for me? I get one shot at getting it right.

I know it's subjective, but what should I expect to pay for an International Script?

Tomorrow I pick up glass and glazing tape, I have the plastic glazing strips left over, at least enough to get a few windows done. Windows won't get new weatherstrip until later this fall but this baby will leak far less with window glass than it has in awhile.

General comment - have you seen what a 3-D printer can do. Lots of stuff that used to be prohibitively expensive, like re-casting old emblems can now be manufactured (printed) with 3-D technology.

Really exciting stuff. Freaking amazing actually.

Now I need to get the door handle working. Rusty, can't get the center shaft out due to the rust so I have it soaking in PB Blaster tonight. One screw is broken off in the threads. Anyone had luck reworking this handle or have a good one?

Haha as I continue to search and read this was a 1965 lock, only used in 1965. I may see if I can free it up and get a machine shop to free up that broken bolt. My wife loves the antenna but yes I think that's what it looks like up. Ever seen that vent unit in a front window??

I saw a thread that said I could use a Kwikset lock with a 5" offset but unless I'm measuring wrong ours is a 4" offset. I don't think an l-100 or 200 has that big of an offset.

Solve on problem and I find another!

Shelly I'll keep an eye out for another antenna, if that one for some reason comes off it's yours. If you come across the radio whip antenna let me know, I need one, not sure how one could be shipped though.

Thanks!

The base of that whip antenna is available at VTS

Stainless CB Antenna Ball Mount with Spring

The whip portion is also readily available . I got mine at radio shack. Search for 102 " stainless whip. Any cb radio place would also have it, also on Amazon.
