Question To cover or not to cover vents?

I have a 65 Overlander and of course as all of you know there are three - 2" vent stacks. As the Overlander is new to me, I was wondering if these need to to be covered in anyway. I went to Vintage Trailer Supply and they sell vent covers, but was wondering if any of you our there have some advice on the subject. Also.. should I mount some sort of screen over the openings.

Thanks a bunch!

Typically they do not need to be covered. you do need to make sure they don't leak! This is a very big source for leaks in the older units. You should do a search for how to fix them and then do it! I did mine this spring and does not take long but you definately need to check these out. Oh, and yes install screen over the pipe and hold it in place with the rubber gasket.

From the Vintage Trailer Supply site:

"To attach it to your trailer, you'll need 8 rivets, a small piece of window screen and some quality caulk or butyl tape to form a seal. It comes undrilled so you can drill it to match the existing rivet holes in your trailer roof."

As long as you extend the vent (using the right size pipe) it should seal the joint from the elements and keep any rain inside the pipe and into the waste tank. A screen over the top of the pipe will keep the critters out.

This is all they need: fix those sewer vents!

Smile To cover or not to cover... that was the question...

Thank you all for your comments on the vents. I will heed your warnings about sealing and proceed with an investigation to see if there is evidence of leaking. I will then just cover with some stainless screening to keep the critters out.

Thank you all again....
