What do I do with THIS?!

I'm in the process of removing the interior skins on my '66 Safari and came across the attached piece of awesomeness...

This is near the rear of the trailer, and the wood only extends as far as you can see in the picture. The metal stud (stringer? I don't know what it's called) is just visible at the top of the jagged opening.

Clearly I need to fix it with something other than wood, but what do I need to do? Do I have to replace the entire stud (which I imagine goes all the way around the trailer), or can I patch the missing section?

Where do I get the new part?

I have a friend who is going to teach me how to buck rivet (am I using the correct terminology?), so I might be able to do it myself.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that any Airstream dealer can get it for you.
