I have the floor out on my 31' 77 Excella. What source do we have for those 'frame helpers'. Sorry, I don't know the proper terminology. Basically they look like they fit up along the existing frame, 'sistering in" to provide an extra layer of frame support. While I have not diagnosed a cracked frame, I would rather put them in while it’s opened up than have to address it in a year or so.
Found the below. Any insights? If you really want to hear about the frame fix proposal you'll have to ask.,
Suggest before you do any fixing on your '77 that you get Airstream Bulletin Number 29 which is about fixing this problem. The main effort is installation of a frame rail reinforcing plate especially developed by airstream for this fix. It will require removing wheels and axles to install. Don't let any one with welding equipment say they can fix this problem by welding on some metal to the frame. Odds are it won't do the job. The bulletin tells you what to do and how. See if you can get it direct from Airstream and if not have a dealer request it for you.
The bulletin actually went out to dealers and authorized repair shops...
the Service Bulletin 29 from Airstream is applicable to /74 models. However, not every unit built with rear baths had a sag problem. Not sure why but might have a lot to do with how much it traveled and how often with a full grey water tanks located at rear. However, if you don't have a problem don't worry until you do. For a test grab the rear bumper and lift up. If the bumper moves and the trailer doesn't it is probabale you have the start of a problem.
There is a second problem with the '68 thru '72 models which was separation of trailer shell from the chassis. It looks like sag but is not as bad. For whatever reason the rear of the body of the trailer (shell) separates from the frame, probably due to rust of bolts, etc.. forming the connection. This can be fixed and Airstream Service Bulletin Number 1 gives the details of the fix...
