Replacing original flooring with vinyl plank flooring

We are excited to have purchased out 2008 28' Safari SE and now are working to personalize it! Any recommendations on flooring you LOVED when doing this yourself? Any tips or suggestions welcomed.
Thank you and looking forward to our full time travels starting in 2021!

Hi

The woven "decking" stuff Airstream uses in the Classics is very nice stuff. It cleans up very easily and is no skid even with water all over the place.

I didn't do it myself because my local dealer made me an offer I couldn't refuse. We haven't taken it on the road yet, either, but I was impressed with the specs for Mannington Adura Rigid Vinyl Plank. They have several references on their website to using it, not just in RVs in general, but in Airstreams. It is a floating floor, but I think you can glue down if you wish. The installers did a great job, and I wouldn't have done the job to save the price they charged me. It looks great.

Shaw vinyl from Lowes

I used Shaw vinyl click together floating floor and added wood shoe mold around the edges. No adhesive. Loved it.

Mannington Adura Max

We used Mannington Adura Max - 8mm Sundance Saddle - which has a sound quieting pad. Not sure if Al and Missy used the "Max". We really like it.

Don't forget to order the mouldings you need to match.

The previous owner of ours had AS Service Center do it. They removed virtually everything from the AS, put the flooring down, then put everything back. It is very attractive woven vinyl flooring (same as used in recent year classics). Looking thru his receipts, it cost about $2500.

Team Hardy, congratulations on your purchase. In the last 2 yrs we have replaced the original floors on two trailers. After much research, one concern that did come up was the freezing temperatures that your rv might experience (in our case, most assuredly would experience; -40C at some points last winter). Since your address indicates Colorado, you will need to consider this as well. The 'click lock" has performed well in the the extreme temps. I would advise against the type of vinyl planks that glue/stick down, because of the contraction and expansion caused by the freezing and warming of our seasons. Good luck with your project.

Water leak and vinyl flooring

Our friends ripped out the carpet in their ‘89 34 footer and installed vinyl flooring. Next came a slow water leak which went undiscovered because it appeared between the flooring. A large portion of the floor had to be ripped out and replaced. They now have carpet again and understand the need for some way to identify when a leak occurs before it’s so bad it destroys the underlayment.

I had just fiberglassed my bathroom floor after treating some wood rot and installed vinyl on top. Being the bathroom I’m always checking for water leaks, but I’m a little apprehensive after my friend’s experience.

Good luck whatever you choose to do.

We replaced the original carpet about ten years ago with a click lock composite floor printed to look like ceramic tile (sorry, don't remember the brand). Installed it as a floating floor and put electric radiant mats under the flooring wired to a thermostat on the wall. Keeps the floor nice and warm to the touch although it does not provide enough heat to keep the whole trailer warm unless it is only a little chilly outside. It's a nice upgrade as long as you are putting down flooring.

Remove everything or not?

I ,too, have a 28ft. 2008 Safari SE that needs the original vinyl replaced. I know removing all the cabinets and fixtures is ideal but I do not have the facilities to do that. Has anyone put the locking vinyl in without removing everything? I know it will be tricky in certain areas due to corners and curves. Very few things in an Airstream seem straight. Any recommendations would be appreciated for me and Team Hardy. By the way, I think they a great choice. Team Hardy,if you have other questions about your recent purchase, feel free to reach out directly.

Hi

If JC will redo the floor with the woven stuff for $2K, that's a deal. I'd head over and let them go through all the hassles. While they did the job, the also would spot any floor issues ( = rot ) that might need to be addressed.

Just want to add that we did not remove all of the cabinets, did pull the toilet though. My outlander is a '72 with a curved kitchen cabinet. We did give careful consideration to the orientation of the planks and ease of fitting around the curves and 1/8" thick walls (beside the fridge and the pantry). We used a scroll saw to make the custom cuts. I am still working on the kick plate in the kitchen and we will use small trim, where necessary, to cover the gap on the edges of the floating floor. If you are a do it yourselfer you might consider this project, I do think some experience with the click lock floor would be an advantage. Cost, all in, under $1000 CAD.

Cork

We used a glued down cork floor in the 89 Excella. It's an industrial grade product. Since the subfloor is chipboard you can't glue to it directly so we laid down lauan plywood first to give a nice smooth underlayment. Topped it off with three coats of waterborne polyurethane. It's held up nicely for 4 years so far.

We used a vinyl plank floor that secured with fiberglass glass tape, not the locking type. We had used the same product in our sticks and bricks house and were very pleased with the durability. It comes in a gray and a brown color option and can be purchased at Menards home improvement store. We installed the gray version in our International. It is much better than the floor that Airstream installed.

Love that stuff, but it is PRICEY! Priced it at $190 per yard in an 8'6" wide roll. Around $1,700 for a 27' trailer!

We just did our 1988 Excel 29 with a bleached oak vinyl wide plank that is locked together and floating. The flooring has a built in cushion underneath. There was no old carpet under our kitchen cabinets so we did not have to pull them. We took out the bed, bedroom cabinet, a corner cabinet and the sofa in the living room so the trailer was open through-out when the flooring was laid. This flooring was left over from a friend's house install and with installation was less than $400. I would post a photo; but hubby is out working through the "punch list" prior to re-installing the bed and sofa!

I had Portland airstream install mine, but strange, near the bath in fc 28, it lifts up, after walking on a few times , it lays flat, this only happened in heat. Going camping this weekend, curious to see if it lifts up. It is a floating product. Any suggestions

We have 1998 Classic 31ft purchased Jan.2011 from club member . Carpet thru-out. I removed and installed floating Pergo type (Lowe's) and pad. Bought 1/4 round molding and trim out all around. Removed toilet to get ALL stinky carpet from bath room. Bought Dremel tool with knife to cut and remove other carpet. It's a time consuming process, but worth it. We have a dog and we go to beach and mountains. It's impossible to keep carpet clean. We can sweep or vacuum then damp mop, 10 minutes done. A miter box & saw plus good set of knee pads, essentials for the project. Good luck.

We installed a Vinyl plank floor in a Hickory color and pattern in our 1988 Excella 1000 32' a little over a year ago. We took all the easy stuff out, replaced any "iffy" subfloor but left the major cabinetry. Purchased it from Floor Traders - 11 boxes was just under $1200. Easy to cut with table saw and jig saw. Has a cork backing and installed without glue. Then installed contrasting shoe molding. Time consuming but worth it. I took all of it out of the boxes and let it acclimate to temp. but when it gets cold, less than 40 degrees the 48" long planks shrink just a little opening a small but noticeable crack between some of the ends.
