Framing with 5" channel - outrigger source
Now that I've exposed the frame of my 1969 Globe Trotter, I see that the rear two cross frames and the main frame rails between are quite rusted out. I propose by cutting off the existing frame about 40 “ back from the bumper and splice on an identical layout but using the lightest 5” channel section and splicing to the forward part of the existing frame. If the calculated weight (which I havn't figured yet) seems excessive, I'll add holes in the webs of the cross members at appropriate locations. Frankly. I don't think the weight will be that much different. Any comments? My real question is this: can anyone direct me to a source of 5” deep outrigger? I think I will need at least one of these. Actually, before committing to the channel, I guess I should ask if the sheet metal sections used on the original frame are available anywhere. They appear to be from 1/16” or 3/32” plate.
