Question Frame rusted pretty badly - HELP

I'm on to my second airstream (does this mean I'm hooked) and I looked at an 80's with the frame looking like it was dipped in acid, worst part lower rails to bumper. Somebody from Pennsylvania used license plates to fix torn aluminum when step disappeared one day, inventive guy. Should I steer away from this one, or not be to concerned, thinking (hoping) channel steel can be welded to replace lower rails. The body is great, no corrosion, no dings, just the dern frame.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. always something.

Hi!

Glad to hear you still have the airstream bug.. this one worries me a bit though. That rust looks pretty bad from what you can see on the outside. What lurks within?
You might want to dig a bit deeper or find something out west and drag it back. Heck then we can get together for coffee and tell stories about the old MB days..

Cheers

Vinnie

Hi,

I would pass up on this one, too much rust, already has pinholes in the frame.
The license plates are a sure giveaway of problems.

There are more units out there......

Looks like a trailer that has been subjected to a salty environment and stored in tall, wet grass. Neglected. A warning of other problems not so obvious.

Not too sure about this one. Although I did have to cut off the last 1/3 of my frame and splice it in. Not impossible but very time consuming. Is the price right? I wouldnt pay more than a grand. Can you pull out chunks of frame? Can you weld?

That rust looks serious. If you can get the welding done go for it. Its all about how much time you have and how much POR-15 you want to buy. I did mine this summer, a 20 foot GT. Pinholes usually mean cut and replace. If you have alot of connectors in tough shape then it makes the job all the more difficult. But anytrhing can be done. If the rest of it is a gem then why not go for it? Bring another old girl back to life!

You probably aren't far off... the rust was likely sprayed at one time with some type of rust-preventer... which cures to give that green algae-look to it.... or it could be from salt...

Either way... this doesn't look like a patch job... at least not for long-term... if you've got the time and money to lift it (if the shell is as nice as you say), then if it was a real steal maybe it's worth the time...

Well after some sage advice, and thinking the worst (shell removal) I passed on this one, and lo and behold fell into a nice 30 ft Excella 1993 for a song. She still needs some freshning but a far cry from swiss cheese.

I just delt with a guy named Kenny who lives in Laurel that sold me my trailer. He was very dishonest about the condition of my trailer. I wont get into details but just wanted to give you fair warning. Good luck and post lots of pics! Cant wait to see more of your trailer!
