Door cut out for '52 flying cloud

Replacing the floor and belly pans in my 52 flying cloud. I've been reading posts over and over in this section on floor replacement and several different posts have talked about the notch for the door. My trailer had been shoddily patched in this area before, and although the notch is there, and I duplicated it, I'm trying to find out what goes in this notch, as whatever it was is long gone on my trailer. I'm replacing c channel and it just runs out over the notch. Is there something that goes under the c channel here?

How big are these notches normally? Like I said, I'm working with a shoddily patched subfloor and the notch they have cut out is about 2"square, leaving the c channel floating for and 11/2" or so. Am I right in thinking this is too big of a notch?
