I took my 29 foot airstream and weighed my options it was replace my frame and floor and all my hatches and some outer skins. Then go and find a big tow vehicle and be at least 8 or 10 thousand in debt or find a smaller camper so i took my 29 footer and cut 19 foot out of the middle and riveted the rear back to the front and replaced the floor and now I have a 10 ft small camper and kept the airstream. It was a lot cheaper than getting another one or a smaller one and i can tow it with a 4 cyl truck with no problems. All I wanted was a weekend camper and I liked my airstream so much that I had to make a custom camper .
I had to take it down to one axle and im still working on the floor plan I still have to put the belly pan on and put some of the inside panels in it is almost done.I call it my little bubble.
give me a call and i can break it down for you.my chopper/exexcella almost paid for itself (including chrome rims)and have pics from start to finish.maiden voyage to saginaw was uneventful except for cold and snow.mine is made from back 16.6" of tree damaged as bought for a song.e me for # cesrtonrv@yahoo.com
All I'm wondering is where will the axel/wheel wells go?
Neat project!
Hi, a good spot and also a very bad area would be just about where the door is. Maybe front and rear axles with 10" or 12" wheels? With steerable front wheels.?????????????????????
Do you have any pictures or information on how you created this mini Airstream. Very cool project. Have you created a name for your creation? There a number of damaged Airstreams that could be brough back to life this way. I'm sure there are a number of people on the forums that would like to see a record of your process. I'd even considered doing a similar project myself. Nice to see you did it.
Thanks Don
Joey, That idea has been batted around here on and off occasionally in the past. As far as I know you are the first to attempt and complete a shortening. But dude, 10 feet is tiny! That's teardrop length! Considering the length shortening the height a bit may make sense too. I had a 12 foot Serro Scotty once and the floor plan was very tight. Actually there wasn't very much floor at all. It takes some real engineering creativity to fit 2 beds (one converts to a dinette) and a kitchen in that space (who knows about a washroom). But if anyone is a creative thinker you are. It's members like you who keep things fresh around here. Best of luck with your project. BTW, plenty of people would be glad to assist with getting you up to speed on photo posting, just ask.
Steve
