bike rack mount on rear of AS trailer

We are purchasing a 22' International AS. to be pulled by a Dodge Durango. We want to avoid mounting bicycles on the roof of the Durango. We are considering placing a bolt mounted heavy duty hitch receiver beneath the rear bumper of the AS. This will enable us to attach a Thule hitch mounted bike rack.

Has anyone tried this? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hello - I thought I would refer you to the above referenced thread. There was quite a bit of discussion on having any weight attached or in the rear of the longer trailers because of the damage it might cause. Some believe weight to be a major cause, others don't, but it might be worth reading as food for thought. Hope it helps. Leigh

With the bathroom, galley, and tanks in the rear, I would not want any additional weight on the rear of my AS. It has a good safe tongue weight as designed, but I don't think it needs any more weight at the rear.

We use a "Grabber" bike rack mounted on the back of our SUV. This works because of the Hensley hitch adds another foot or more clearance between the tank cover and the Airstream. The Grabber arms mount the bikes high.

Hi Nik - I know there is a way to link the saggy bottom thread into my post here, but I have not figured that out yet. Can anyone else help??? Meanwhile, I used the search box on the home page and typed in Saggy Bottom. The thread came up #1. If that fails, it is in the "General Repair" forum and you would just have to scroll down until you see the Saggy Bottom thread. Hope that helps. Leigh

Mounting anything on the bumper of an Airstream trailer, is asking for trouble. The design will not tolerate a non functional weight. You will be asking for frame to shell separation at the bumper. Toss in unbalanced or improperly balanced running gear, add in the moment arm, and it's easy to demonstrate the results of the added weight.
