Looks like taking this unit back to the MOTHERSHIP was the best posible option for this repair. There was more damage than I expected and they replaced more of the flooring than was planned. Sounds like she is coming along very well and I hope to have her back by late next week. Wonder if she is getting looked at by the folks up there for the rally...... Hummmm, I should of left a cup to collect donations to help pay for all this.

Hope they get everything fixed right for you. Let us know what they found wrong and what they did to make it right.

You said the leak went undetected. Where was it? What do you think the rest of us need to do to make sure we don't have any leaks?

I have a 2005 Bambi Intl CCD 16' and a soft spot in the floor between the dinette and the bathroom. It is definitely rotted. I've had the AS about a year.

I thought if I recaulked the roof and replaced window seals, vent seals etc I could stop the leaking but sounds like there are a variety of leaks/causes for the floor rotting.

Can anyone offer reco's on repair in the PNW?

Mike, we saw her while we were at the Alumapalooza. We wondered if it was yours. They had pulled all of the furniture out and were stowing it in a big trailer while they worked on the inside.

16 footers along with the 22s (the op's stream model) are the only recent units...

produced with osb sub flooring.

while it's possible to do PARTIAL sub floor replacements and many are done this way...

the only way sure way to determine how much damage is present is to PULL UP the sheet flooring...

which means removing almost ALL of interior.

if you are gonna accept the EXPENSE of repair,

and the repair is more than a few square feet (how many sq'ft in a 16) ...

have the repair done with more water resistant materials...

since MOST of the cost is labor.

(( i suspect and HOPE clancyboy's subfloor was NOT redone using osb))

a 16 footer in the pacific northwest is gonna get wet INSIDE...

rain, leaks, pipe failures, spills, toilet flow, INTERNAL condensation or UNDER SIDE condensation....

it's not an IF question but rather a WHEN and HOW OFTEN wet issue.

and it's virtually impossible to maintain away or prevent water from happening.

the osb is THE problem.

and once the osb expands or starts to come apart, well...

on the POSITIVE SIDE...

-it's a small unit which means LESS labor charge...

-the COMPANY service center in j/c does very very good work...

-they offer a DISCOUNT or parts and labor over the winter months.

I think we all have to agree that Airstream as a company is still around after all these years when so many others aren't because it's run by very shrewd business people.

It's sad that they know they're on to something with the amazing style and heritage of the Airstream brand and image. For this reason, they know where they can skimp and where they need to invest in quality fittings, and so they seem to almost have a 70s Ford mentality of "what we can get away with before it costs us more"....

That said, I won't trade my love of my metal hot dog for anything made of plastic. I don't think there's a more fixable RV out there... It reminds me of the old Land Rovers, where the whole machine just used two bolt sizes, and the entire toolkit was with the jack

It wasn't just the small Air Streams that had OSB floors. My 1990 Excella 29' has about 4' feet of serious damage across the back of the bedroom in the rear of the trailer. It needs about 7.5' x 4' of replacement. I'm going to use 3/4" marine plywood. My front couch will come out to be reupholstered, and I'm afraid what I will find across the front.

It would only have cost them a few hundred dollars, depending on the size, to use marine grade plywood instead of the trash board.http://www.airforums.com/forums/imag...lies/angry.gif

right d' and 30s/31s and 34s did back then too, some years.

my notation was "recent units" by that i meant ~2000-2010.

while your '90 is still not really old it is 21 model years ago.

and i agree completely BETTER subflooring is a good thing,

and not all that much money, IF used during the original build.

the rational they offer for using oH!sb in the 16

is that there are NO spliced sections of plywood so the oh-NO-sb is stronger...

i don't buy it, and would NOT buy a recent 16 OR 22 because of the subfloor.

I read somewhere that it has OSB in the subfloor and that marine grade plywood is a good replacement option. Do you know if there are non-wood options such as plastics, aluminum or some recycled composite?

It's quite an expense to add the cost of holiday in JC on top of the cost of repair. Wondering if Eugene/Portland/Tacoma has the experience to do the job.

there is no harm in EXPLORING repairs at spokane, fife/tac or OReGon...

even SOCAL has shops that can do good work.

do ya want it done by the folks who do them (successfully) every day...

and a 16 can be stripped inside in 1 day.

of course putting it back2gether takes more time...

as awful as osb IS, you still need to expose it, to determine HOW MUCH needs replacement now.

if it turns out to only be a few sqft by the entry door, and maybe a strip near a window...

a good case could be made for ONLY replacing those pieces,

then SATURATING the entire subfloor with a resin/epoxy/sealant/hardener soup...

or sell it NOW and buy something larger for the same money as UPfixing this one.

Unfortunately the soft area spans from the dinette to the bathroom door. I'm confident the bath should come out to repair the floor.
