52 floor replace

Hi I was given a 52 Flying cloud with a repaired frame and the body sitting next to it.

I want to deck it and replace the body. There are sheets of plywood here for it but something seems a miss.

Is the plywood just as wide as the outriggers? Does it hang over like 1/2 inch? ( The plywood I was left does)

I added some pics.

So how wide should the plywood be?

Thanks

There should be a U shaped channel between the top of the plywood and the shell. Is it still attached to the shell? Assuming the channel is there, that would be the 'pattern' for your plywood.

The plywood will go the the ends of the outriggers for the most part. It may vary a little. Where it extends beyond the outriggers is usually on the rounded corners.

If the channel is on the shell don't assume it has retain the original shape after it was removed from the frame. If the person put bracing at the bottom of the shell from side to side in several places, it may measure out correctly.I would consider setting the shell back on the frame with plywood sheets setting on the frame. Then you can check how the channel lines up with the outriggers and scribe the corners.

If that's not feasible take some careful measurements of the shell width and length at the channel and compare to mounting points on the outriggers/frame.

There should be a reinforcing panel at the front and rear (some older models just have it in front). It should be a heavy gauge L shaped steel panel that goes up the skin about 12". It sits in the channel and goes up the inside of the outer skin. It's bolted through the channel to the plywood and frame and riveted to the outside panel. You'll see see a couple horizontal rows of rivets a few inches above the bottom of the shell.

A few photos of what can be seen from the inside and bottom of the shell would help us give you better guidance.

Nice to see another Overlander saved.

Looks like a fun project. Harold made some good points. Make sure you have all the frame and outriggers complete. The hold down plate is important. I installed plates on the front and rear since mine was a double and not a twin. Doubles had the side cargo door and not the rear. The plywood on my 55 did have the plywood overhanging the end of the outriggers by 1/2”. Don’t have any idea why unless they wanted a wood cushion at the banana wrap to prevent outrigger punch thru. So, once the frame is complete, plywood first with elevator bolts. Then the 1 1/2” “C”-channel on top of the edge of the plywood held down with elevator bolts near the end of the outriggers thru the C-channel and outrigger. Secure the channel where needed with SS wood screws into the plywood. The belly pan comes up the bottom edge and forms the banana wrap that gets about 1/2” crimped over into the C-channel and pop riveted to the channel. I just split a 4’ wide sheet of 5052 .032 and formed the banana wrap. This way if I have to remove the belly pan in the future I don’t have to disrupt the banana. Good luck, Bubba
