1972 Tradewind Land yacht

Well, after reading all these wonderful threads on rebuilds, I guess I'm going to take the plunge. I feel confident that there is enough knowledge on these forums to help bail me out of trouble.

I just bought this 1972/73 Tradewind off of Craigslist last weekend and am going to start working it over.

There is a crack in the shower pan and the floor beneath it is non-existent. The rest seems pretty solid, but I'm figuring when I start stripping, I'll find more damage. the frame shows some light rust, but is in pretty good shape. It's spent most of it's life in Arizona and New Mexico (mostly parked). The inside smells like mildew and mouse pee. The frame under the bathroom shows more damage that you can see in the picture below, but overall, I think it's in decent shape for a 40 year old trailer.

It came with 2 aluminium LPG tanks too :-).

This weekend, I'll start stripping down to the floor and see what I've got.

There's a tag on the front/street-side corner, visible in the pic of the tongue/propane tanks. (just to the right). That has the build date and model year on it.

The tag says 72. The PO said it was sold as a 73 and has the original 73 manuals. I think it was a 72, but sold in 73 because it has the wet bathroom and the 73 manual shows a separate shower pan.

I didn't have a wide enough angle on my camera, so I had to resort to the phone to get some inside shots.

It's pretty trashed on the inside. The PO lived in it full time for about 2 years and then it sat parked for a year. I think I am the 4th owner.

My wife is in charge of decorating and we still have to hash out what we are going to do. The PO painted much of the vinyl woodgrain, but that's OK. I didn't like it anyway. Restoring to original isn't going to happen, because neither of us like the original decor. This will be a custom job.

Since I'm going custom, I want to put a full bed in the rear, move the bathroom to the middle and change the front couch to a standard 2 sided dinette. We will be traveling with teenagers and don't want them walking through the bedroom in the middle of the night. Future travel will be with grandkids.

I do not like the fiberglass interior endcaps and am going to pull those and replace with polished aluminum. The wife has her eye on some more modern appliances, so I'll probably sell the original stuff (what I'm not planning on keeping) Some seems to be in decent shape, others seem to be in questionable shape.

I'll know more about whats good and bad later today as I start digging into it. I'm also going to have to go look at toilets. Moving the interior around is constricted by the wheelwells and the bathroom will pretty much have to go right over the left wheelwell. Not sure how that's going to work.

Welcome to the Forums. There is going to be a Restoration Rally in Albuquerque in June. Should be very informative for you.

Howdy and welcome to Airforums.com, Ephraim! You'll find lots of advice here, and I would imagine you will be taking advantage of it, since you have set out seom pretty ambitious goals, what with moving the innards of the trailer all around.

It's been pointed out before that you might want to have a look at where windows and outer access doors are before you tear the interior out, since it's very likely that you will want to move those items before you can put the bathroom in the middle.

Also have a look at the drains, since moving the bathroom may also require a completely different tank set up for venting and the intake and outputs. However, that would open up the possibility of adding a grey tank, for waste washing water.

Anyway, you seem to realize that there's lots to do, so I will simply wish you the best of luck with your project!

Welcome! Once you start to tear into it you will more than likely find more stuff that needs attention. But it sounds like you are in the right mind frame. I am wrapping up frame repair and floor replacement on my 1965 Sovereign. There are a lot of good people and great advice here so read on. My suggestion, only read about what you are working on. I try to break up my tasks so it doesn't get overwhelming. Measure a lot and take pictures. I am looking forward to see more progress!!
