1955 Flying Cloud Flooring

We are looking to replace the flooring in our 1955 Flying Cloud. We would like to take it back to a more retro "original" look. Currently there is cheap linoleum in it. Does any one have any idea of what kind of flooring it may have had originally. If so is there any place that I may find a reproduction of this retro flooring?

Thanks for the help.

Lightbulb Try this

Leigh,

Mostly black and white tiles (9x9) which has gone out of style in favor of (12x12).. The main reason was asbestos used in the early tiles and, by going to 12x12, you could tell it wasn't the ole asbestos tile..
The best I can recall from my past experiences..
ciao

BTW, we're gonna have "Natural Cork" installed in our unit very shortly~!!

Hi Leigh.....

I've just bought a 64 Overlander......lot's of work to do! Been agonizing over flooring choices and done a lot of looking around. Thank God for the net!

Armstrong.com makes linoleum (no asbestos) with lots of truly vintage colors and styles. Show ideas of how to use it. Most all of it comes in sheets (rolled). They only make to tile colors, a bright blue and a bright yellow.

Novalinoleum (Swiss company) makes some tiles with a few choices. And Forbo makes some great tiles and sheets. None of these have asbestos. You can see all of these including the Armstrong at iFloors.com.....they have the best color samples that you can copy and paste, or save as jpegs if you're set up for that.

I use Microsoft Image Composer, part of Front Page, to "glue" a bunch of tiles together to get a feel what a "field" of the stuff would look like. Even throw in some photos of fabric swatches, etc. to see how they look together.

Problem with linoleum is weight and installation if you're a do-it-yourselfer like I am. Not recommended for the uninitiated....that's me:>)

Esthetically challenged 9x9 brown swirl tiles were in ours. But maybe in another 50 years they will be back in style.

Bamboo plywood?

My Flying Cloud is an empty shell at the moment. I am thinking of laying down a few sheets of bamboo plywood. any thoughts?

Also, how about that Natural Cork flooring? where can I learn more about that?

flooring natural linoleum

Hey,

Instead of vinyl tiles.... you should consider natural linoleum with vintage look...
try this

http://www.armstrong.com/reslinoleumna/browse.jsp

very strong and durable, exist in different colors...

I'm planing to put that in my 54' Flying Cloud....

Pierre.

Another source for real Linoleum (not vinyl) is Forbo. Their products come in both sheets & tiles and are available in many colors. We've had the Marmoleum "Real" Linoleum (sheet goods) down for almost two years & LOVE it!

Good luck in whatever you decide ~
