Dave the Airstream in Germany

So, first thread in this Sub-Sub-Sub-Forum...

Nice thread and lovely blog, very good work! I will look forward to following your travels...What a nice surprise taking your wife to Ireland! I just loved scenic Dingle and western Ireland (though I tent camped during a time of drought so not as wet as usual), sounds like you enjoyed it too.Thanks for sharing!

we are not sure if you follow our blog, so we just wanted to give you an short update on the progress of our Airstream Renovation...

What we did so far

After gutting the whole interior, we

• replaced all subfloor
• repainted the frame
• reattached the Shell to the Frame (Rearend Seperation!!!)
• replaced all exterior lamps (Clearance lights, Brakelights, Backuplight, Foglight etc...)
• rewired the whole trailer
• re-riveted some exterior shell segments (there was a very badly done replacement job of one of the POs)
• replaced all window and door gaskets,
• replaced all looks
• replaced the insulation (still in progress)

We are now into installing the interior walls back in place, which might take another week or so as some minor rewiring and installing of insulation still has to be done. Next steps after that might be to replace the old Roofvents with our new Fantastic-Vents and then we can start to install the bathroom back inside, but before that we have to repaint everthing including the interior walls. A bigger job will be to reweld some sections of the mainframe (mainly the Blacktank holding section) and to strengthen the frame in the back of the trailer as we will have some more weight in the back in future. We plan to have two 210 Ah Batteries which weight 160lbs each and we need to get the hitchweight lowered to a max of 330 to 550lbs depending on the TV we'll have in future. Another big big job is to replace the coupler and the axles with new european standard axles, which has to wait due to no money and no need of towning the trailer in near future. We plan to have him on the Campground for some time to use him on the weekends. Last but not least the whole interior furnishing has to be done, following our new floorplan...


so there still is a lot of work to be done , but it really feels much better now that the Interior Walls are coming back in...
We'll put a list together with all parts that we replaced or plan to replace, so that we can publish it on the Blog, maybe it is of interest for other people that are crazy enough to start such a project! Would we do it again?? Well, yes but with a trailer in better shape and a more realistic timescedule. It takes more as double the time planned and will probably even cost the double that we planned, but we still love the trailer and hope to keep him!!

Hi Summerkid,

thanks! Both Dinettes convert into beds, but the rear dinette is more likely the bed for everynights use. The Front dinette can also be used as a deep couch for a more relaxing televison viewing or for the relaxing glas of wine in the evening...
