Abby gets all the attention

Hello Y'all,
Here are some pics of the Airstream we are buying. The interior is all original in very good condition for being 38 years old. The exterior is mostly good except for a few skin problems and some heavy frame corrosion under the rear bath. The right front was damaged when a tree fell on it. The panel was replaced. Looks like a "Hack Job" to me. The right front window has water between the panes. I'm not sure how to repair this window. I'm sure someone will tell me to replace the axles!

You can count on it ... and then some.

I added some of those jelly-window sticker things above my window water line. Nice undersea theme goin' on. Make the most of it

Back at home

Well we finally got Abby back home from the RV shop here in town. They just did an inspection for me to make sure I wasn't in danger of killing myself or someone else. Her are there findings;

Stove=checked OK

Oven=checked OK

Refrigerator=Checked OK on gas and electric (flint lighter rusted)

Water Heater=pilot will not light. (they recommended a new water heater for $800!)

Battery=will not hold a charge. Installed new Interstate deep cycle marine group-27

Wheels, tires, brakes and axles=checked. They installed new backing plates and magnets.

Plumbing=leak under street side twin bed-repaired

Total bill $717

When I got home I checked everything again and found;

water leak under the sink from fresh water tank vent tube line.

water leak from fresh water drain valve soldered joint at the rear of trailer.

Repairs-

I purchased a new pilot and thermocouple, gas control and burner from Crestview RV in San Antonio. I installed the new pilot and tc and got it to light. The burner lights when the valve is turned to "ON" burns for a minute or two, then I hear a click and the gas shuts off and flame goes out including the pilot. Any Ideas?

I spent the day cleaning. Lots of cleaning. Mud daubers and rodents can reek havoc on a trailer.

I've been using Krud Kutter to remove the sticky stuff from the interior walls. Seems to be working well. I think I need to increase the mix ratio to 2:1.

One more day of repairs and cleaning, and we're headed out for her maiden trip. I hope I can get it all done in time!

Lance if you replaced both the thermocouple and the pilot. Make sure the pilot flame is bathing the thermocouple and check to amke sure your connection of the thermocouple to the gas valve is tight. If both are good then it sounds like the spring in the gas valve is weak and if you have already bought it, go ahead and install it.

Lance, I had a similar problem with my water heater...Here is what I did:
Open the access door to the water heater
Remove the pilot and main burner assembly from the thermostat
Place a piece of cardboard from the edge of the water heater to over the outer lip so water can flow out of the compartment
Take 3 screws off the exhaust cover screen and remove the screen assembly
Try to remove as many nests and blockages with a shop vac from the exhaust side and the intake side of the burner area before running the water hose
Finally, start spraying water into the exhaust side of the water heater until it flows freely and clear out of the intake side
Re-install the pilot and burner assembly
Re-install the exhaust screen

all done...Mine worked...hope yours does too.

Our maiden voyage was a success! It is amazing how wonderful an Airstream is from 1972! Everything is working, including the hot water heater! We came back yesterday afternoon from the Blanco Rally. We met some of the nicest people on this plant I believe. Can't wait for more great times in the future!

The long process of repairing all the leaky spots is now under way. I started with the bathroom window. I'm updating to the newer D shaped weather stripping. It is evident that this trailer had/has leaks. The window and screen frames are all pitted from corrosion. Here are a few before and after pictures

Lance,

I really don't want you to be disappointed so......... don't forget to replace those axles, those aquarium windows are heavy and probably have caused the axle rubber to take a set!

I plan on tackling the rear end separation problem after the first of the year. I have a bunch of preparations to make before I tear into the bath. I will post my progress or lack thereof on this thread. until then, we're going camping!

Working on some window weather proofing

Well, there are a lot of windows in a 1972 Ambassador. Today i successfully removed all the old Vulchem and did a little polishing around the frame and re sealed with Sikkaflex 221 ONE window! It took about five hours. Here's what the old stuff looked like..Click image for larger version

Polished some Aluminum with MET-ALL

Here's are some pics of the light cover that I polished this evening. Cast Aluminum is sometimes difficult to polish effectively. I used a 3M Roloc abrasive disk 120 grit to remove the surface corrosion then used 220, 400, 800 and 1000 wet/dry sand paper. I used a cotton polishing wheel with some MET-ALL aluminum polish I bought at Camper Clinic II. It took about 30 min. Click image for larger version

Amazing work.

Harker Heights isn't so far. If you'd like an extra set of hands working on that rear end in the Spring, I would be happy to help.

Dave, Thanks for the offer! I have been wondering how to approach you for some assistance. I guess you solved that for me. I plan on tearing into the rear immediately after we get back from our small West Texas trip. I looked behind the toilet this evening and noticed that there is no floor underneath the water heater! Ahh the things you don't "see" when you are a wannabe! I'd be honored to have you lend a hand! I'll send you a PM so we can link up.

Lance that's nice and shiney. Are you going with a LED while you have it out. It's much easier to install with the cover off.
So your trailer is suffering from rear end seperation. When Dave comes to help have him bring a tube of seperation H. That will cure it.

Always got some "cracks" don't you, Chris! LOL
I was just thinking of the LED retrofit, but I'm kinda partial to the glow of incandescent bulbs. Still kicking it around...

rear end cracks LMAO you'd think I was a plumber or something.
I just put my LED's in today and tested them tonight. WOW are they bright and use 1/10th the power. I tested them tonight after dark and the over the door light lit up thw shop well enough to read a book from 15 ft away and the scare light looked like a runway landing light.
