Single Axle 24'

Hello all! I am seriously considering buying a 1960 24' Tradewind Double. I have a 2010 19' International right now and when I look at this Tradewind all I can think is "that seems long for a single axel!" Anyone have any experience with these? Also a little taken aback by the black water only holding tank. The guy that is selling says you have to use a blue boy for the gray water. This trailer will be my backup Airstream for when my husband insists on tagging along with the kids and I. Otherwise it will be parked and enjoyed on our lot for guests. I'd love some advice on this! We purchased a 23' Safari earlier this year. It has both characteristics you point out. We have towed it several hundred miles this summer and have not had any issues with the single axle. Plus, only one set of tires and one axle to replace. Also, the lack of a gray water tank has not been a big deal for us. We have used a bucket and/or a blue 10 gal tank while at the state parks and just let it run onto the ground when it is being used at the house, as a guest cabin.

Airstream added the second axle as trailer weight grew. I briefly owned an early 1950's-era Cruiser/Overlander with a single axle. That was 26'.

Hmmm. I feel a little better but it just seems like there is so much trailer behind the axle. Here is the trailer I am considering. 1960 Airstream Tradewind

I've never seen a 22' in person and wonder if that is easier to tow. Here is a good looking one but too far from me in California 1966 22' Safari - Airstream Trailer Classifieds - Airstreams Trailers For Sale

The Safari is an open floorplan, with two couches that open into beds. The Tradewind has either a double or two twins located amidships, with a divider wall between them and the kitchen/living area. Both should have rear baths.

I have never seen one of those two couch Safari's in person. I think if I had, I would know for sure which I like but the Tradewind seems link a good deal at $10k in very good shape and original with the exception of the fridge. I am afraid to take too long to think about it or that Matthew Hoffman of HofArc (he is nearby where it is for sale) will buy it, redo it and put it for sale for $50k.

Here is a link to pics of our 1960 22' Safari that are still up on the dealer's website. We checked it out in person four weeks ago, and we are roadtripping to pick it up next weekend. We looked at quIte a few both smaller and larger before deciding on the 22'. If you only need to sleep three or two plus pets, I think it is the perfect size!

This same dealer has another vintage 22' also for sale. It is in reasonably good shape mechanically, but it IMHO is more of an "as found" condition on the inside.

That is a beauty you found! I looked at the other 22' on their site and that is cool too. I want as original as possible. I really wish I knew someone with a 22' around me so I could see one I. Person. The 24' trade wind has the double bed midship and I don't know if I like that or the open space of the 22'! I am going to lose my mind...
