Rule of thumb...discount off MSRP?

As I consider, nearly new verses new, is there a rule of thumb when looking at "off the lot" cost.

I am not sure of exactly what you are asking. If you are asking about the percentage off of MSRP you can expect to get, you are looking at between 10% on the most popular models that are sold easily all the way up to 20% on the really slow moving units.

Nearly new units are a crap shoot. It depends on where you might find what you are looking for and how quickly a dealer or private owner want to sell it.

Same here, my experience left me thinking ordering a unit is the way to go.

And, yet, some folks pay almost the full sticker price to get exactly what they want...go for it.

Consider that with a new trailer your property taxes, insurance, and registration may be considerably higher than with a slightly used model. In addition you'll bear the expense of a number of accessories (sewer hose, 30 or 50 amp extension cords, water hoses, leveling blocks, hitch) and other items which may or may not be included with a previously owned trailer.

As Brian indicated, recent year slightly used units are a crap shoot. We looked for over a year at 25FB, 27FB, and 28' units 1 to 5 years old and within a 1000 mile drive. We finally found a 3 year old unit on eBay, got a very good price on it, but gave back some of the "savings" having floor rot repaired at the factory. In addition we incurred the cost of several trips to see units that were not as good as advertised or where the owner would not negotiate to a price we found acceptable. Those trips, while a useful learning experience, cost hundreds of dollars in travel expenses.

Consider also the cost of travel to pick up a new or used unit. An 18% discount at a dealer within 100 miles may be better than a 20% discount at a dealer 800 miles away depending on what model you are buying.

Best of luck to you.

I repeat I was considering a 2016 30' Classic, my wife nixed it very quickly. But in making a simple phone call to two large dealers the discount was 20% with no discussion no requests. In both cases I only asked for their "selling price" on the in stock units.

So, if looking I would expect as Brian said - 10% on very popular models, the 25' units are the highest volume trailers sold by AS, to 20% or a little more on the slow movers. Maybe a hitch system thrown in etc. We got a hitch system, and portable Sat Antenna along with a nice discount on our 30' unit.

Keep in mind that a good dealer maybe worth more then the last 1 or 2% on a deal from a crappy dealer or one that is far away. I was very pleased with the price I received from my local dealer a few years ago and they went way above and beyond for me many times in the first year of ownership with warranty issues.

Really helpful input all. It seems my model, the FC 28 twin, is not a "fast mover" compared to others. Given my timeframe, model desire, and AC config, buying new seems like the way for me.

Which begs the question, beyond Dan's suggestion for The NW area dealer, and of course, Colonial, who are the "big dealers" volume wise? I've already seen a quote for a 2017, but there must be a at least 2016 on a lot somewhere across the fruited plain.

The dealer I use (we've now purchased two AS from them) had a 28 FC Twin on the lot when I picked up my 28 Twin from them last week.

Woodland Travel Center, below is their link to their current inventory. Zach and Chad there know their Airstreams.

I am looking to buy a new 2017 Sport 16'. A deal order is expected on the lot in a couple of weeks. However, I am not in a rush. Should I get a better discount with a factory order? My thinking on this is that the dealer has not had to finance a trailer that may sit on their lot for some time.

I have to admit I didn't worry myself silly over a couple of percentage points. However I knew exactly what I wanted (a fully optioned Serenity 28 Intl). I asked for best fully delivered price from three dealers (Fairfield,CA, Lakewood,NJ, Thornburg, VA (2 hours from home). All were close but, my local dealer gave me a slightly better deal and they are local. I am hoping their service dept is good. I was pleased with my delivery so I figure i will get good service from them. I ended up with a 20% deal on a factory ordered fully optioned AS including a very nice hitch. Perfect delivery so I am pleased. Know exactly what you want and find several dealers you can work with and go for it. Once you decide to close the deal, don't look back or fret about it. Enjoy your trailer.
