Price Consensus On 1987 34' Excella 1000

My wife and I are considering purchasing a 1987 34' Excella 1000. The asking price is $18,000.00. It is a very nice and clean unit. The interior is nearly flawless. The exterior has only minor fading on one panel of both end caps. The front has the usual minor dings from being towed. There is only one curb-side Zip-Dee awning. It has two doors, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It looks like it was a custom ordered unit when it was new. It has new electric tongue jack, extra electrical outlets, extra night stand and drawer stack in the bedroom, new AC unit, and new refrigerator. I just don't feel all the extras and new equipment warrant the $18,000.00 price tag.

Could you all chime in on how much you might expect to pay for this unit or what you would consider a reasonable offer?

Prices on used trailers are hard to figure. Sellers ask for what they think the unit is worth. If it does not sell they may need to adjust the price. As a buyer you can offer what you think the unit is worth, if the seller agrees fine, if not, walk away.

The larger trailers are always harder to sell for several reasons. They can not go everywhere the smaller units can, they are too long for many state and federal camogrounds and require a larger truck to tow with.

Have you looked in the classified section of this forum? They have several 34 foot unit of that era.

Richard,
Thanks for the advice. I guess I should have mentioned it is sitting on a dealer's lot, so I would expect the asking price to be a little high, but I think what they are asking is a little too high. It was origianlly listed as consignment, but the dealer bought the trailer outright. The consignment price was $20,000.00, but the salesman said they could probably come down to $18,000.00 In my research so far the average price seems to be in the 12,000.00-15,000.00 range. The unit is seven hours away from my home and I hate to make an offer on something I haven't even seen yet, other than Internet pictures (but it does look cherry). And seven hours is a long way to travel, make an offer, and have that offer refused. We live in southeastern Pennsylvania and finding gently used Airstreams is like pulling hen's teeth. I have had a bead on a few, but they are either too new and too expensive or too old and trouble waiting to happen.

My wife and I are looking for a second gently used trailer to put on a site we lease at Penn Wood Airstream Park in Limestone, PA.

Thanks again for the advice.

I would suggest not making the trip until you determine what the dealer will accept. Tell him that if you like the trailer you will pay X amount of dollars. If he accepts, go look at it. If not, you saved a trip. Ron

I can tell you my horor story, 900 miles later and the trailer is nothing like the picture and has tons of issues that pctures would not show. Another 900 miles home (13 hourss) and no trailer and no return on a $300 deposit. Big lesson learned.

We Bought It

Well my wife and I bit the bullet and bought Airstream #2. We drove the seven hours from southeast Pensylvania to Columbus, Ohio to look at the trailer and found it in grade A shape for a 20 year old trailer. They would not budge on the price, but I figure it is worth it becuase it has all new bearings, wheels, tires, brake drums, magnets, backplates, a/c unit, refigerator, and toilet. We brought it home the same day and now we are making it our own. I was amazed at the fact that absolutley everything works from marker lights to the 20 year old microwave. It had always been garage kept and the skin is great. The only thing we were not happy with was the ugly mauve carpeting. So we ripped it out and now we are in the process of replacing it with a Wilsonart laminate wood floor product. We are using up a pile of extra planks we had leftover from a house remodel so it is basically free. Another amazing fact was that after ripped up the carpeting there was absolutley no evidence of leakage or water damage so the floor is really solid. We will just be getting it finished and it will be time to winterize it and put it in cold storage. I can't wait to get it on the road in 2008.

Starting Collection

DesertDog,
You are correct. We are leasing a site at Penn Wood Airstream Park which is a four hour drive from my house and I was getting tired of rushing home from work, hitching up a trailer, and going over hill and dale. We are going to put the second trailer in Penn Wood for the season and then all I have to do is rush home from work and jump in a car. The 2006 will be used for actual road trips.
