Pre-Owned pricing

Consider the following: 2014 purchased last fall; owner purchased as impulse buy; now being sold thru the orginial stocking dealer.

If I recall the MSRP was $95k, now listed at $75k. With the "left over" market that seems to happen is this a decent price or should I go for some underage hoping to bring the pricing down.

Chances are $75k is probably about what the original buyer paid, maybe a little more. Then the trailer was probably repo'ed when he never made a payment.

Has it been camped in?

I think I would start negotiations around $55K. It's used!

Dealer claims it's just buyers remorse and it's barely used. Even if it's a repo it's now on their lot for sale. Pics DO seem to verify there has been little use. Are you serious at the $55k mark?

One guy's opinion - $55 is a great offer! Remorse or repo, it's still used. You have to know what you want and what your walking point is. But starting at 55 and walking if they can't do 60 with Airstream's factory 2 year warranty from your date of delivery would be my walking point.

Again one guy's opinion. Everyone's mileage will vary.

Spring is the worst time of the year to get a deal on a used (or new) trailer in stock, but the $55k offer isn't far off in the fall.

You might do best negotiating the price to order a new one and wait for it.

I know it's prime season to move them. I LOVE the sound of $55k even $65k isn't too bad in my book. It's convincing them I'm helping them. LOL

I'd love to order one up for delivery. It seems SO difficult to understand exactly what I can do/modify and the costs of such mods. AS just needs to change up the Classic interior colors.

Let's do some rough math. I don't have insider information, these are just wild ass guesses.

MSRP: $95
Dealer Paid $60
Financing/Prep/other stuff cost dealer $10
He sold it for $75 to first buyer. Trailer deprecates 30% as it is hooked up to bumper.
Dealer made $5
Buyer realizes he can't afford $800 a month for 10 years and still eat
Dealer rebuys it from first buyer or bank for $50
Dealer sell it to you for $55
Dealer again makes $5
You get good deal

Just set your limit and be willing to walk if they don't meet it. That's the tough part. Personally, I wouldn't budge on the 2 yr factory authorized warranty from date of delivery to you. But that's me.

Go be you and have some fun!! :-)

If you are financing, it may be a higher interest rate for a used trailer. So sometimes you can buy a new Airstream for less than a used one, in the long run. You must know what the cost is to you when it is finally paid for.

You're in King William County right? We're talking Safford RV, aren't we? Any chance you can get pre-approved from your bank or credit union?

The motto "Money Talks and Bulls*** Walks" definitely applies with Safford. At any point in the sales cycle the dealer and the salesman know that having used inventory on the floor reduces the "hots" of the customer to buy new. The special negative on a repo/buyer's regret unit is that it makes the next potential buyer start to worry even before the sale.

$55K might be ambitious, but if you have pre-approved financing (cash for the dealer) and you go in with the calm, clear attitude "Today or No-day - they'll make more so I can walk away" it could happen. Just show up early in the day and set a reasonable time limit. I will stay one hour. I will leave, go to lunch and come back - and you can let me know your decision. (Do be prepared for a charge to transfer the warranty, Va. sales tax, state and local charge for a license plate that's good as long as you own the trailer - and some kind of dealer prep. Negotiables:
  • full propane tanks
  • hitch
  • sewer solution or stinky slinky
  • awning hook must be there
  • stabilizer crank must be there
  • hand crank for the tongue jack must be there and FIT
  • tank sensors working when you leave - they'll fail in a week.
  • full set of manuals
  • If it's an induction microwave there should be a raised grill
  • all appliances work on all fuels they should

I'm sure I've left off a few things - the P.O.'s are sometimes very generous and you might find dishes, silver, napkins, placemats which were bought especially for the Airstream included in the sale. If so, whoo-hoo. If you get a ProPride or Hensley Hitch - that would cost your $2500 to $3000 new, so super whoo-hoo.

Happy Hunting. Paula

Potential rally coming up at Chippokes Plantation south of the James opposite Williamsburg - third or fourth weekend in April. Consider it... and Yes you CAN take your Airstream across the James River Ferry, but during rush hour the ferry can fill up. Mid morning to mid afternoon, no hassle.

Paula

EDIT - Chippokes is in Surry County. It is $33 per night water & electric paved sites big enough for 30' with 30 amp service, 50 amp is $3 more - I'm going bargain hunting

Actually I have relocated due to promotion (YAA!!) and it's a different dealership. I try to do my research and have my ducks (and bucks) ready. I have been able to maintain myself so that I don't have too many issues when I hit their door. I have been VERY happy to join this site and get some great feedback and assistance from the members.

Paula thanks for the list of negotiables I will surely use that regardless of the new/used status.

I'm hoping to get myself into a situation where I'm full/partial timing on my schedule. I want to have a bit more freedom and enjoyment in my life. I have seen a few AS owners along the roadways as I travel. I just can't wait till I get one and head out!

Actually if you let the dealer finance it for you you will have a better chance of him accepting a low offer as he is paid a reserve amount from the lender and that adds into the equation.
When you pay cash the dealer makes nothing.
So Offer to finance with him if he can be competitive with the terms.
