Paying before picking up?

We're buying a used Airstream at a dealership out of state which we plan to pick up in a couple of weeks. They want us to send them a check in the mail for it. Really? I thought we would be sealing the deal when we went to pick it up. It is used (2014) after all. Is this just "how it's done"?

They certainly have a right to ask for a deposit - in fact they'd be crazy if they didn't.

A deposit as part of a written agreement makes sense. Payment-in-full seems a bit much.

Refundable deposit maybe, but no way would I pay in full prior to through eyes on stem to stern inspection.

I agree with you AWCHIEF. No way would I pay in full on a used Airstream. Also I would think it would have to be a refundable deposit on a used model.

I can understand a non-refundable deposit on a built to order model because you are tailoring your own new Airstream and reserving a place in the build queue. But on a used model the dealer is not really out anything if you choose not to buy upon inspection.

We already gave them a deposit. It kind of struck me as rude. The sales manager called me and said he was sending me the paperwork for me to send back to them, but he didn't directly tell me they expected me to send them payment in full. That was fine up until I received the paperwork with the "instructions". He didn't even include his business card with the paperwork. It's been a few days, I guess I should call him and tell him we plan to pay when we get there. Maybe they would like a bigger deposit?

A small amount of earnest money, maybe. Refundable contingent on acceptance of the AS, YES. I always check the Horses teeth before I shake hands. Caveat Emptor.

Any leverage you have to fix any items like a broken hardware handle, ripped awning (yes you want to see the awning before you drive away) or any throw in items like a new fresh water hose goes out the window the very second he has your cash.

Inspect everything and have someone show you ALL systems BEFORE paying up. If they don't want to do this then cancel the deal as they possibly have something to hide with their financial standing or have multiple buyers on the trailer.

Get it in writing about refundable. I was all set to pay for used and then the fabrezzz air cleared and the mold smell became very strong. Turns out it had not been winterized for a few years and pipes froze and broke.

I purchased my 2014 in March this year and only had the deposit down when we did the walk through at Airstream Adventures Northwest. There were a few items that needed attention and only then did we sign the paperwork and close the deal. They treated me like I was buying a new unit.

That's interesting. Perhaps, they feel the price we negotiated with them precludes us from that kind of treatment? Or that we're not local?

If you KNOW that this is a reputable dealer it's one thing but even then I think it's strange to demand payment in full up front. If you don't know the dealer or their background I would beware of a new scam. I would not recommend that you send them the money up front.
