NADA Guide

Hello All

Looking at a 2005 unit. Are the NADA values anywhere close to reality in the marketplace?

Thanks,

Brad Burgess

Nah-Dah is correct pronunciation.

NADA (nah-da) has a way of matching what insurance and car deelers reference when in THEIR favor. Not very honest in my way of thinking. Numbers are manipulated.

Bottom line, your "value" will be a pipe dream in nah-dah's dealings.

Unfortunately, the responses to my inquiry, apparently like the NADA values, are worthless to me. If they are not relevant then what would be truly helpful info from this forum would be an assessment of whether the NADA values are higher or lower than the market. While some may consider them irrelevant, most dealers that I have chatted with use them as a starting basis.

Brad, sir,

Seems we did not want to appear to upset your ability to perceive we feel that the numbers offered on value of AS ARE LOW

According to my recent experience, NADA assigned values are about 20-25% less than Airstreams are actually selling for.

For several months I had been looking for a used 27-30' Airstream, in the age range of 2005-2010. I had done a lot of research and felt I knew actual sales prices of all models within these parameters based on condition. I had monitored all the internet classifieds I could find and negotiated hard on several of them. A few were sold at prices higher than I was willing to pay.

I finally found what I wanted at a very good price, but when I sought financing, my bank informed me they used NADA values as the market value. They said they would loan me up to 100% of the NADA value. However, I realized that everything I had considered up to that point would have been overpriced according to NADA valuation. It became evident the only way I could finance an Airstream (and I have excellent credit) would be to pay about 25% or more down; or, buy one in crappy condition at the NADA price.

Luckily, I was able to find a good deal on a 2009 30' Classic in excellent condition that the seller needed to sell quickly. If this is your situation, either you will have to find a needy seller or buy a piece of crap if you're depending on NADA valuation for more than about 75% of your financing.

Part of the problem is that NADA is an association of dealers. The numbers reported in the NADA guides are a compilation of prices actually paid at member dealers only— and extrapolation from those prices based on typical rates of depreciation— and do not consider private sales at all.

The amount paid in private sales is not reported to NADA, or to anybody else except the Federal and State taxmen, so NADA has no way of factoring in those prices.

So, unless you're buying from a dealer (perhaps on consignment) the NADA will not be of much help.

I found that once an Airstream hit the 5 year point the NADA value plummeted. Not even close to what they were selling for. I ended up buying new. Less down. Good interest rate. Payment wasn't that much different than a used one.

So where would one find a reasonable "value" for trade-in? Say to upgrade to a larger AS?
