Long distance purchase-advice please!

I am in the process of buying a 29' Excella. How do you manage a transfer of money for Airstream if you can't get there yourself? I can construct a method but are there any customs, practices particular to the US which would help me. This is the trailer, I found it on ebay

The first and most important thing to say is that this is not a scam. I contacted Terry(Overlander63) and he put me onto a list of volunteer inspectors. As a result, kimili(Michael Bester) has very kindly agreed to go along this Sunday to jiggle the handles and press all the buttons!

This is not a matter of trust! If anything I want to remove any necessity to use gut reaction. If you had to manage this, how would you create a method of payment/exchange that both parties could have confidence in?
Regards,
Marc

If the seller has a lawyer he uses you could have the lawyer make sure the documents you need are in order and execute the transaction on your behave. Small fee of course. Or you could just locate a lawyer in the town. This would give the seller and you confidence in the deal. Lawyer could accept wire transfer from you of the fund.

Yes!

That's just the type of method I would construct. The lawyer could hold the payment and release it when the vendor gets a receipt/bill of sale from the shipper when the AS is collected. Does that work for you?

Any more ideas?

Admin note: Rick, your post is beyond Moonstruck's 5 minute edit window, so he couldn't have changed the pics... I don't think. The pics worked for me. Don't know what's up.

Nice looking unit!

Will the shipper act as your agent? or know of an agent that will act on your behalf. Where is the Airstream located?

Agent

I will create a receipt/bill of sale that I will send to the shipper and a copy to the attorney. The shipper will present the signed document to the vendor for himself to sign on receipt of the Airstream. The vendor can then take that document to the attorney for payment. This will happen on a designated day.

The Airstream is in Little Falls, New Jersey. I suffered very bad luck. I could not get a ship anytime soon out of Newark which you could push the damn AS to. I have to get the trailer transported to Baltimore for soonest shipping.
Anybody know/recommend a shipper in that neck of the woods?
Marc

You will cause confusion with the term vendor if you mean seller. We've a little behind on the language. Don't forget the signed clear title. You'll want that from the seller.

Just an afterthought here.... in addition to paying attorney fees, your local banker can usually do this for you. They can wire the money directly from your account to the sellers account once you make the final authorization. We have done this before. It is a little old fashioned, but you can talk to folks over the phone and it happens quickly. The banker will be sure the title, etc. is all there with the other banker. They can fax copies of the title and all to each party immediately upon transfer.

Good luck and congrats on your new Airstream!

I purchased my first Airstream thru eBay from South Carolina. We used an escrow account (which involves a fee) for the deal. The deal went off without any issues.
