Question buying an airstream

I am interested in my first air stream aprox 30 ft and year 2000 or newer. What are the things to look out for or problem areas. What extras would be nice to have.

Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

Welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us.

When shopping for a late model Airstream. Generally, you'll be looking for a unit that looks good, inside and out as opposed to a trailer that is all beat up. Check the manufacture date on the tires. Many times, the tires still have a lot of tread, but are well over six years old and not trustworthy on the highway. Check all of the appliances including the air conditioner and furnace for proper operation. These are expensive items to replace.

Nice things to have are Fantastic Fans, a water filtering system, and an internal black tank flusher.

You also need to consider items that come with the trailer like sewer dump hoses, hoses for potable water, a power cord extension, wheel chocks, and leveling blocks.

You are also going to need a high quality weight distribution/swat control hitch system.

Many times some or all of these item come with a used Airstream if the owner is getting out travel trailer camping.

If you are going for a used Airstream - purchasing from a "reputable" dealer can not only have many of the trouble areas "pre-sorted" for you - but also allow you to purchase an extended warranty.

If you need financing a dealer may be able to get you a cheaper rate as they are "accustomed" to RV financing and work on a daily banks with such lending institutions.

Lookout for filiform corrosion issues. You can do a search on corrosion here and have plenty to read.

Som extras nice to have are full awning package, 15K BTU air conditioner.

Good luck in your search.

Since there are several models to chose from in that size range, I would suggest seeing as many as you can and narrow it down to the trim level you like. For instance, There are Flying Clouds, Internationals, Classic Limited, and so on. All have different layouts, trim levels, and options. Keep in mind that options have changed over the years also. Specific models each seem to have different issues in different years.
There is also a lot of info for specific models and year trailers near the bottom of the Forums Page for you to peruse through, also don't forget to look thru the Gallery for pictures people have posted.
