Advice on selling on consignment

Dear Airstream buyers and sellers,

I am seeking some advice on the use of the forum and the consignment systems for the sale or my 34 foot limited 2003 unit. I have recently installed new tires, batteries, and both ceiling fans. The living room fan just stopped working. I would like to know in advance what to expect with respect to consignment workers. Have any of you had an experience you would feel like sharing with me. I see prices from 19 K to 35 K in the classifieds, I would probably be motivated toward the lower end but a consignment individual wants to meet with me and I believe he will be holding all the cards.

We are original owners and have in recent years seen our trailing use drop significantly. At one time we were full timers but we seem to have trouble finding the time and energy to get on the road any more. So it is probably time to let it all go.

How does the selling experience with a consignment individual who sets a price for you and takes anything more that is obtained for himself compare with selling on the forum. We live in the San Jose area of California.

Why don't you just sell it here on the Forum in the classified section?

You can go on that section and see what your competition is. If you do list it make sure you put lots of pictures and write a complete description of unit and it's history.

That or just send me some pictures and we might just talk.

I would try listing it here and Craig's list first before paying the consignment fees. Sold my 2012 on Craig's list a couple years back with out issue. Just make sure all is legitimate and complete the transaction at your bank before transferring title. Good luck!

Thanks Howie and 2012FB,

I am considering the Forum but I contacted an RV dealer as well. My original thought with the Forum was that due to their national reach it might be considerably more effort to find a buyer in the forum. However, the consignment seller has not given me much information about his price. (He is in the local Bay Area region and I wondered what to expect from him.

I agree with the others, try selling it yourself via the forum, Craigs List or any of the RV listing sites online. I sold my 40ft diesel motor home through consignment because everyone that previously looked at it had a coach to sell themselves or I had to take it as a trade in. Dealers have the ability to take a trade & sure enough it got sold by the dealer taking a trade in.

I would try the forum. When I sold my 25' Safari several years ago, I used the forum classifieds and had lots of people from all over the country inquire about it. I sold it to a guy who drove from Colorado to East Tennessee to pick it up. I purchased my 30' Flying Cloud from a guy in Houston. If you have a nice trailer and the price is right, you will probably find a buyer.

I sold my previous Airstream, a 2005 30' BH through consignment with my local Airstream dealer. It was a very good experience, a percentage of the sale price went to the dealer, plus we paid needed repairs. I think a customer will have high confidence if a dealer is backing up the sale and we did well on the transaction.

After the sale, I ordered a new 27' FC Twin from the same dealer.

Thumbs up Might have a customer...

I had a guy come in the dealership about three weeks ago looking for a 34' Airstream. He lives in Palm Desert. Do you want me to send your info to him or direct him somewhere?
