who is certified to verify AS vintage for the DMV?
DMV language is: state certified motorhome dealer to verify year. this is only so that i can use the black and yellow CA plate which is period correct. my question to DMV: can you give out the list of folks who do the verifying? DMV: NO.
why wouldnt they give out the list? how do i know who to go to? i dont think they know. are they just passing the liability buck?
the great thing is that the plate is clear, and its registered, but we just need to verify its actually is what year i say it is. (1954) and no its not stamped into the tonque. i know we can tell through the VIN but i need someone 'certifed' to tell DMV.
From what I have been told, an employee of the dealership must also be certified. Start calling your local dealers, and ask if they have someone that is a certified "VIN verifier".
That is odd. I thought that the VIN was enough to verify vintage as the year of manufacture is included in the VIN. Perhaps it's different with different manufacturers.
Hey Greenrig, I would love to see your Airstreams sometime
We found that different DMV offices give different advice/instructions.....I don't think the Culver City, CA DMV had ever registered a "Travel Trailer" before......Thousand Oaks had no problems registering our 1969 Travel Trailer....Culver City told me to have the trailer weighed......when they put in a weight, it wouldn't let them register it--they kept trying to call it a "Coach".....also the PO of our 68 received different quotes for charges for registering the 68 because it had dropped out of the system.....one office wanted years and years of back registration fees....another office didn't charge as much...go figure....pj

my tone toward the DMV is not a real positive one and i'm sure everyone has a wild goose chase story. although it wasnt all bad. my antique plate is clear and ready for my 1954 FC. just need to prove its a 1954 (my FC). other than vintageairstream.com photo archives, is there anywhere else that may match vin number spans to year of manufacture?
and my vin is a 4 digit vin, so the year is not included like later models -darn.
no one is claiming state certified year of manufacture verifier?

Just my personal opinion
1973 Dodge W200 PowerWagon, 1977 Lincoln Continental
1979 23' Safari, and 1954 29' Double Door Liner Orange, CA
If they don't take Fred's word for it...how about asking Airstream Inc. to validate your year based on your VIN. If they don't "certify" the manufacturer who would they certify???
