What year is it?

I purchased what I was told was a 1974 28' Airstream at an estate auction. I haven't got the title yet so I'm not sure of the year. The S# is 0162. Someone here told me it was a 1979 International 31', but I'm questioning that. It does say "International" on the rear, but it says "Soverign-Land Yacht" on the ID plate. Today when we removed a cabinet to install a new carpet, I found a magazine from 1975, so something is amiss here?

There's got to be more to your serial # than just the 0162.
Post the whole thing, and maybe some pics and we can help out.

Sovereign is your model name so it's definitely not a 28 footer. Land Yacht is just an upgrade trim designation. From '69 on, the Sovereign was 31' so that part is accurate also. For the year, we need the rest of the VIN and or some pics.

You VIN should be something like:
Letter 31 Letter Number Letter 0162
The Number will be your year.

When you get the title, assuming TN issues one for older units, post what it says.

I found this in one of your other posts:

Your complete VIN shows you have a 1979 International 31' Rear Bath,Twin bed built in Ohio. You measure an Airstream from bumper to ball, not just the body.

1 = International trim package
31 = Length
T = Rear Bath, Twin Beds
9 = Last digit of the year, 1979
J = Built in Jackson Center Ohio
O162 = sequential number

The ID plates on the 1970's vintage 31' trailers say Sovereign Land Yacht. International is a trim level, like a XL vs a XLT or Lariat on a Ford truck. There was a base model Sovereign but I have only seen one of those. Most appear to be Internationals with the Excellas coming in second. As far as the magazine...I like to read back issues too

Me too! incomplete VIN?

I also need help identifying the year for my Overlander. It is a 1969 according to the seller, 1970 according to the DMV title, but I don't trust either assessment.

The plate says this:

M-4 S-6010 384

which doesn't seem to match what others have written about VINs. The S seems to indicate California-built, but not sure about the M-4.

thanks as always!

That looks like the tag from the MHMA, or a rebuilt state issued VIN.

It looks like the (very faded) plate says California Department of Housing, and gives a "DoH" number also: A1141957. Is there another plate where I can find the actual serial number? I don't see any other plates on the trailer.

It will be on the plate by the entry door that says "AIRSTREAM" and either "Cerritas, Calif", or "Jackson Center, Ohio". It will say Overlander, and there will be a number on it. That should be your serial number.

BY GOLLY! It is so faded I had to use a flashlight to try to get some contrast on it, but there it is. It turns out I have a 1965 26-foot Overlander, not 1969... how bout that!

Thanks for the help!

Congradulations!!!!!!!!

Kaulike -

I would like to offer my Congratulations to the allready lengthy list of people that have welcomed you to the site!

Nice to finally have the factory designation that tells you what you have - no ifs, ands or buts....!

Now the real fun starts - the part where you get to research all the old Forum files (LOTS a readin!!!!) and find out what you are likely to need, how you like the looks (based on all the other interior shots) and where the shake out trip will likely take you. ALL VERY GOOD THINGS! And remember - it's for your AIRSTREAM!!!!!

Enjoy the heck out of that addition and hope to see you out on the road one of these days!!!!!

Ciao

Axel
