Unhappy Vin No Nightmare!!! Please help!

Ok! I know you have heard this story before, So here goes. i bought a 1962 Globetrotter last year. It was purchased out of state. Before i can get a new title it had to be vin inspected at tag office. And they did it, numbers don't match. Title reads 1920323 trailer vin no reads 192D323. I have sent for a title copy from the state it came from. Now all titles from 3 owners say 0 not a D. What is the correct vin no and what does the vin mean? What can i do now?? Thanks for the help Pam

192D323 should be the VIN. It's means 19 feet - 1962 - Double bed and 323 is the unique production number. Your trailer was made in Ohio.

Here is a real treat. This link will take you to pictures of your trailer!

Im not an expert, but I am pretty sure the O should be a D as in double. In fact, I would wager that your Globetrotter has double beds. If you search enough you can find a thread here that explains the vin codes. I think you will have no trouble demonstrating that the vin# on the title is impossible.

It's obviously a typo on the titles. To get your title may require you to post a bond. I don't remember exactly what the wording is, but in Colorado I believe it's called a bonded title.

Ask DMV if there is any kind of form the previous owner can fill out and notarize stating the correct VIN. Mistakes like this happen all the time.

I recently had a similar scare when I received the title to my 59' Overlander. The California title read 1259262 rather than the correct Airstream I 269252. I learned from my DOL here in Washington that they don't use the letter designators in trailer VINs any longer (I'm sure somebody will have a diffent experience, but this is what they told me), so it will always read "1 259262." In looking through the original owner's California DMV paperwork going back to the 1980's, it has been listed consistently with a 1, rather than an I. However, the original maufactures statement of origin from 1959 as well as the very first California tag that I found tapped inside the kitchen cabinet both contain the I. I (sorry for so many I's) suspect the same thing is going on with your title.

As an aside, when we called Geico to add the trailer to our insurance, they told us the same thing when we gave them the proper I259262 VIN number. They said that while Airstream used the letter designators, most DMVs will not use the letters.

Jeez, as soon as I posted this I noticed I added my own mistakes to the VIN stuff in my post. The California title read 1269252 and the correct VIN according to every piece of paper including the Manufactures Statement of Origin is I269252 I'm not good with numbers.

Thanks for all the info. As of right now i have 4 titles with the 0 and not a D i'm back to 1973. So i kinda thought that might be right on the dmv's not using letters. I was having a hard time understanding Kansas doing a vin inspection and still being wrong on the title. it's starting to come together now. Thank Pam

When typewriters were the norm, they often lacked the numeral one on the keyboard. When needing the numeral one, a lower case "L" (l) was used.

Add to this thread now-- a problem with a B van that I recently sold. For years my Ford B-van had been registered in NC. I sold it to someone in SC and their insurance company inspected it. The new owners contacted me to inform me that the title and the VIN # of the van were "off" by one digit. After 640 miles of driving, countless hours of phonecalls, DMV License and Theft Bureau inspectors, and hours of waiting, the ordeal is "almost" over. (Profit is already gone) And I am the one who was "caught" so to speak, having to pay for the corrected title.

VIN Numbers don't match with Title...

I'm going thru the same thing. I bought my 1977 31' Sovereign out of state and the first numbers on the VIN placard and title don't match. The first character on the coach VIN is either an "I" as in India or a lower case "l" as in "Lima", the title has the numeral "1" - all the others match, it was a natural mistake.

I contact the state DMV where I bought it and they sent me a letter (notarized) stating they only have records that go back 10 years. I'm in the bureaucratic hamster tread-mill now trying to get this corrected. My next move is to take the on-site VIN inspection certificate to my DMV -- its signed by a state police officer.

We'll keep you posted... Best of luck!

When I lived outside Austin, TX, I bought a nice 1957 Fairlane 500. The VIN was absolutely correct. The title said Chevy rather than Ford, though. I guess when you say "57", Chevy just automatically gets attached.
