If you think that is expensive MOVE TO ARIZONA

Since our property tax is CHEAP compared to other parts of the country. Tags for your Cars and Trucks and RVs are hefty in AZ. They assess the tag based upon NADA value. Newer the vehicle, higher the tag price. My '05 Safari tags and title are over $600! '05 truck is $450. 'The Man' will get you going or coming in the end, they always get their tax in some shape or form.

In Tennessee a permanent tag for our 1970 31 footer is just 17.00. The clerk said if it stays in state it would never have to be renewed.

My '89 32' is $170 annually. When I registered my '74, they didn't have a BB value that far back so we (me and the clerk) took a swag to what was agreeable; I left pretty happy with a $54 tab. I'm sure in Maine they go back to the 1920's for some Allis Chalmers tractor and adjust for appreciation and inflation.

It's "The Golden State" for a reason...

In addition to the highest gas prices in the 48 states, California also boasts hefty registration fees.. Plate for 18 year old Excella renews at $96 (down from $101 last year..) and 4 year old Excursion is $190... Add in 8.5% sales/use tax on purchase and on all gasoline sold and our roads should be better maintained also.. These registration fees were 40% higher prior to Governor Arnold arriving, and very few of the dollars collected ever get near the state agency responsible for roads and bridges..

Just did my new Safari 2 hours ago, here in Louisiana the Tag is $10.00 a year or $70.00 for permanent. I went for the permanent. The tax was another matter.

Would you believe that Maine even has the original purchase price of a 1930 Model "A" Ford Tudor Sedan as a reference point for the tag for same??? Admitedly, it only resulted in a minimum fee of about $12.00 - but there was indeed a basis on which the cost was derived-----and they definitely know the new MSRP price of every vintage Airstream Trailer!!!

Here in Michigan we now have a "Permanant Plate". It goes something like this....
If your trailer weighs 2,499 lbs or less your "one-time plate fee" is $75.00.
If your trailer weighs 2,500 lbs or more your "one-time plate fee" is $200.00.

I used quote marks for a couple good reasons...

"Permanant Plate" - I am sure they will find a way to get us to pay another annual fee on the "Permanant Plate".

"one-time plate fee" - If you sell your trailer to another Michigan resident that person will have to pay his "one-time plate fee". Your old plate is not transferrable to another trailer and the new owner of your old trailer cannot use it. Everyone has to get new plates all over again.

I am sure, come this November, our Canadian-born governor will be looking for a new job. Let's all pray that happens!

Ya know....
I asked a clerk at the Secretary of State's office about the "formula" they use to calculate plate fees on motor vehicles....
She told me that it is a combination of the weight, age and value of the vehicle....
I told her that I knew that BUT I wanted to know how they calculate it. What percentage of what and how they come up with THAT exact dollar amount....
She called her manager over and he said that they did not know and I would have to call Lansing....
I asked her if that is where we employed all of the state's rocket scientists....
She did not see the humor in that.... I sure did!
An example of plate fees....
My 2004 Pontiac Vibe was $85.00 last year and my 2000 GMC Safari was $104.
The year before that they were less money....
Now something had to GAIN in their formula...
Let's see here....
The vehicles depreciated in value... That did not gain....
The vehicles did not get heavier... That did not gain...
The vehicles did not get newer... That did not gain...

Hmmm....
Seems like the only thing that GAINED was the revenue generated for the state... And yet we have some of the WORST roads in the country....

My pickup was around $71. I have an Ohio Historical Vehicle plate (we still own a place up there), on my A/S, that cost $19, and is good for 50 years.

Wink love my 03 19 ft bambi

Our govenor Ernie Fletcher has legal troubles and a huge deficit approved budget.
Our Bambi costs in Kentucky help offset some of the woes:

tow unit 2003 chevrolet pickup
state license annual fee$ 12.00
clerk fee $3.00
advalorem tax (annual personal property) $260

2003 airstream bambi
state fee $5.00
adj county fee $1.00
advalorem tax $209
Late fee (11 days late) $7.23

of course state farm insurance
premium $329.00
local tax $18.92
KY surcharge $4.94

City ordinance
Can't park unit in yard or driveway october-may
Trying to pass another restriction of 24 hours only with permit for 24 hours

Storage lot $40 per month

Can't think of better way to spend retirement money and time

License plates are cheap on trailers in Missouri. I think it runs $9 plus change plus some small administrative fees for the license office. They get you however on Personal Property tax which I think ran somewhere in excess of $400 for the Classic this year. Its based on the valuation of the trailer....so the more it costs, the more you pay.

Pattersontoo,
Next year Bambi's cost for just a sticker will be around $750.00. Each year it goes down, but ssllloooooowly. It's personal property tax is what they get you for, which is .0095% of sticker. Then, they use a convaluted calculation and Voodoo for the ownership/luxury tax. The whole thing is crap, but what do you do? Pay the man!
Once Bambi is 10 years old, its will cost under a hundred bucks annually.
