No Title advice

I should probably run from this but maybe someone has an idea. I have a shot at an old Silver Streak for little or nothing, one with blue squarish tail lights that extend up the side a bit.

Here's the problem it has been on a property for 12 years. No title. To make it more interesting the property owner is not the original owner. The legal owner left the trailer there and the current owner's father filed a lien on it, then he died. The trailer was willed to the current property owner.

I also could not find the VIN

Any ideas out there?

Silver Streaks are cool and at the worst, good for parts. What condition is it in?

There has to be a process for untitled vehicles in NM, but it may be very complicated and frustrating. Go to the library and look up the statutes and regulations on this so you'll know what to do and then see what motor vehicles says.

What happened to the lien? Was something done to transfer ownership via the lien? Some expire automatically and others may not. You'd have to do a search in the lien's book or files at the county clerk's office. If the guy who filed it never finished the process, the will doesn't matter because you can't transfer what you do not own.

The present property owner may have to do something since it has been on his property—perhaps under abandoned property statutes. You may have to walk him through this.

Our first trailer did not have a title, we used International Title Service in Las Vegas, and it only took 10 months to get a title with a case with the BBB. Big lesson learned.

I would look for something with a title unless, as Gene says, the property owner can do something with it as abandoned property.

Good Luck!

Broadway Title has advertised in Hemmings Motor News for decades and is highly respected in the hot rod world for their work on replacing titles. Check out their website. Fees are somewhat high, but it really is the only way to go unless you do a bonded title through your state which is usually a 3-5 year process. I used Broadway Title on one of our Airstreams and within a month I had a good title, new plates, tabs and registration.

I think it is a Streamline. It looks a lot like this except the tailight housings are squared off, not round and painted blue. It has Hehr type windows, not jalousy.

A couple of broken windows and no back compartment door but otherwise looks sound. I don't see any water damage. Have not been inside.

I will try and go back and take some pics.

Difficulty with title depends a LOT on the state. California is relatively simple for trailers, since they stopped doing pink slips.

Talk to your local DMV and ask them.

I just bought an Airstream trailer in NM and the owner did a lost title application in order to get me a title. Said it was a pretty easy process. I'd contact NM DMV.
Good luck.

Broadway Title is under investigation in several states. Colorado will no longer recognize Broadway Title paperwork. Double check with the NM DMV as I think there is a bonded title procedure that is fairly easy to do.

I have gone through some of this before in NM and it was a real hassle. What makes this more complicated is the legal owner is unknown, although it is obvious he abandoned this trailer around 12 years ago.
