Maine Registration

Has anyone used any of the companies in Maine to register their trailer? There are several companies on the web (Google Maine Trailer registration).
From what they advertise, all they need is a copy of a bill of sale for trailers 1994 & older. Some do campers, some dont.
I was thinking of registering my trailer through them....

Q: Does a trailer need to be inspected to get a registration in Maine?
A: Maine does not require the trailer to be inspected to be registered.
Q: Is it legal to register in Maine if I live in another State?
A: The majority of our customers do live in other states, non-residents and businesses can register in Maine. As long as you travel interstate you can register in Maine.
Q: How long does the registration process take?
A: It is possible to get a plate the following business day using our “RUSH” service.
Q: Is there any set up costs or hidden charges?
A: No, the only additional charge is for the POA (Power of Attorney) that is needed to process the work for you. The cost for the POA is a one-time charge of $20.00
Q: Any minimum or maximum number of trailers needed to use this service?
A: No, we offer our service to owner operators that register one trailer and we work with larger companies that register thousands of trailers.
Q: Do I need a title to register in Maine?
A: If your trailer is 1994 or older it is title exempt in Maine. If your trailer is 1995 or newer it will need to have a title. If already titled in another state we will need a copy of the front and back of the title.

New Order(s) – submit the following:

1. The number of years you want to register
2. The original Manufactures statement of origin( MSO) or
3. Copy of title if already titled in your name front and back
4. The original title if you are going to title in Maine ( 1995 or newer)
5. Copy of bill of sale ( to show proof of ownership)
6. See below for computing charges
Want a Maine Title? We will need the following items:

4. Date of birth for all personal names on title
5. Any signature signed with POA – need copy of POA (Power of Attorney)

I applied through the STAAB Agency/State Of Maine. I paid Maine excise tax of 5% of the sale price, provided a notorized bill of sale & I received a Maine registration & License Plate today.

That seems to be a scam to avoid excise tax; they tried that by going to Oregon from around here. I did register my Land Rover in Maine (which was non-titled in those days), but kept my WA State driver's license. I was pulled over for a tail light and produced all my paperwork. The locals were not very pleased that there was a 3,000 mile difference in the two places of residences. I'd be checking with my insurance company on that and home States are aware of the deal; all it takes is a neighbor calling in and you got some 'splaining to do.

Is this a possible solution for our friends with honest trailers with missing titles?

If Maine is still a non-titled State, it may well be true. However, I stand my my post and suggest contacting one's insurance company first. "In order to be an outlaw, one must be honest".

It looks to me that if you steal an older trailer all you have to do is get it to Maine, forge some papers, and it is legally yours all in one day! Sounds like they do not even have to inspect it and check the VIN.

I certainly want it to be harder than that for a thief to legally own the trailer he stole from me.
