Confusing VIN # please help !

I have just recently purchased a 1977 Airstream 31' Excella 500. I have been doing some research in preparation to do some restoration work to it and have seem to come to a quandary when deciphering the serial number, every resource that I have been able to locate says that the 4th digit can only be an A,B,D or a T to determine the trailer floor plan configuration. Mine is none of these, it's the letter "G" ? The entire serial number is E31-G7J-2893 any help that you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Sincerely Jeff Burnett

What is the layout? Is it a standard or is it some custom hybrid? I have a buddy of mine that had a 34' with two doors on it. Airstream used to build a lot of semi-custom, one off stuff for people. What is the VIN on the GVW tag down on the lower left front corner?

Is it a front lounge model? Does it have center twins?

Well that's the problem, the trailer is gutted, ie that's why I was researching the vin #, it was obviously a rear bath but other than that I don't know.

Yup the numbers match...

I would contact Airstream and see what they say. I don't know how vintage friendly they are these days. We can also wait around a bit and see if any of the walking encyclopedias check in.

I have never seen any serial numbers outside the standard ones, but that doesn't mean anything either.

And... a little more:
http://www.airstream.com/wp-content/...c408b94ef8.pdf
But THIS is the very best one:
http://www.airstream.com/wp-content/...dsheet_70s.pdf
Note that the serial # column is blank so something happened in '77 and we don't know what, hmm, maybe Andy knows.

Flygrrl, thank you, I have found all of those links before, and did also notice on the one that it was blank for 1977 Excella and thought that was kinda odd. I appreciate all the help.

Wahoonc, thank you also, I'll contact Airstream and see if they can be of any assistance. My Excella seems to have had many options on it. It has 4 awnings, 1 on every side, to include the one on the drivers Side that spans most of the entire length of the trailer, of course I'm not sure if it had the central vac system since it is gutted. It does have ( non operational ) 4 wheel disc brakes with the 70's slotted mags. All of the original operational systems are still in place, heater, water heartier, roof top a/c unit, roof top tv antenna, the original dual propane tanks etc.

The four side awnings aren't all that unusual. They may have been standard equipment on the Excella, or at least a readily available option. I have seen them on quite a few trailers over the years. I really like the one on the left side, it makes a huge difference in keeping it cool.

My 1954 cruiser only has 6408 on it. Is that the entire vin number?
