I just put a downpayment on a 76 Airstream from Canada,, here in Florida, we have a State Title, and a Vehicle Registration... The seller is from Ontario, and she is giving me a "certificate of ownership, signed over to me",, it looks like a small title,, Does anyone know what kind of registration process I am in for?,, please let me know
Rod
i have bought a dozen trailers in the last year or two...sometimes with nothing more then a bill of sale from the owner...go to your tax office and show them what you have and be ready to pay taxes...plus about 140.00 or so for plates and registration...pay the extra 7.00 for the title while you sit there at the counter...the piece of mind is worth it...

Yes, that's all you'll get with an Ontario vehicle. She keeps her licence plate and keeps the "plate portion" of her ownership certificate (the card is perforated, she just tears it apart), and signs over the "vehicle portion" to you. (It's rather simple in Ontario, transfer at a licence office takes less than 5 minutes if you have the paperwork in order. BC is another story. )
If you were transferring ownership of a privately-sold vehicle within Ontario, you'd have to pay $20 for a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP). Actually, a private seller is obligated to provide it to the purchaser. It will show ownership history, and if there are liens registered against the trailer - in effect, confirming whether or not you have clear title. I'd ask her to supply it to you.
Thank you to Everyone who responded so quickly. I was thinking I might have a mini nightmare in store for me. I just got back from the DMV and they confirmed what you have told me and gave me copies of a sample bill of sale, etc.
