It is on the tongue/a frame. Could also be on the name plate according to the thread below. I suggest you use the search engine as several threads on how to decode the vin exist.

Go here.

Welcome to the forums.
Try replacing the "I" with a "1". Many states' tag offices do not recognize the "I" as a valid character, and will substitute a "1" instead.

My trailer has an aluminum plaque riveted to the street side just behind where the curved section ends. On that plaque is the VIN number. The number you have does not seem long enough to be a VIN.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

You have posted the VIN. Explained it means:

I - International Trim
31 - Length of the trailer, a Sovereign
D - Rear bath, Double Beds
9 - a 1979 model year
J - Built in Jackson Center, OH
683 - sequential number

This site also explains the VIN: 79Sovereign

I31D9J1683 is the VIN just like Bill stated. The sequential number is 1683, Bill missed the one. That does make it a 79 since it is a 4 digit number. The suggestion of using a 1 instead of the I is a good one.

In PA you can usually get a title re-issued if you provide a picture or a pencil rubbing of the VIN number. However I am not sure of other state's laws regarding lost titles.

I think you may have problems greater than decoding the VIN. Obtaining a lost title replacement is easy assuming you are the titled owner. If you've bought a trailer without a title, you may never be able to register it in your name.

The best bet, assuming you can still contact the person from whom you bought the trailer, is to have him or her apply for the lost title replacement. When that arrives, he or she can simply sign it over to you.

It sounds like there was a money exchange with no paperwork. Keep in mind that when the old owner applies for and receives a new title in his/her name the trailer in your driveway will be his unless and until that person signs it over to you.

Agreed, but if you can't do that. MO may have a DMV form called an Affidavit of Sale the seller signs and notarizes and you supplement the Bill of Sale with.
You may also be able to post a Assurity Bond which is basically an insurance policy to DMV in case another person comes out of the woodwork with a valid prior claim of ownership.

It varies from state to state, but a constant factor I have found that does not vary is the number of different answers you get from DMV is in direct proportion to the number of DMV employees you ask.
