bonded title but Vin# is only 16 numbers in NC?

Hopefully I can get some help. I live in NC and I have a 1973 excella 500 without a title. I am working on getting a bonded title. However when I call the NC DMV to get an estimate of worth and when they look up the VIN I only have 16 and I need it to be 17. I am getting the VIN number off the plaque under the window. The NC DMV says if I can not find the 17 digit number I have to get to appraisals. Any thoughts? thanks

Are the people at your DMV trying to look the trailer up as a car or motorhome? 17 digit VIN numbers didn't become standard on cars until the early 80's.
A quick check at Airstream and the Vintage Photo Archives show that your VIN will be 10 digits. How did you come up with 16? Did you add numbers from the placard by the door?
I'd bring photos of the build plate, tongue stamping if you have one, and ask to talk to a supervisor.

Good luck,

Tom

It's really not a VIN number on the coach. It is more like a Model/Serial number.
Indicating things like length, interior trim, year and location of manufacture.
As for value. ??????

good news from dmv

Called a second time got someone who knew what they were doing.
The DMV says a 1973 excella airstream is worth $100!!! Good for me since I have to get a bond for 1 1/2 times the value they say it is so like a bond for $15.
