Any way to get a title?
I bought a 1973 25' AS that had been sitting in a resort for years. The owner had no title. Any way I can come up with one?

Yes, just have to jump through some hoops, pay some fee's, and a waiting period.

Every state varies. Check with the DMV in your state. In Arkansas, we file for a Title of Abandonment, publish our intent as long as the law states, have a trooper inspect it, then - a title is issued. Not too difficult here.

Why is it done this way?
There is one thing I don't understand. If a person can get a title for an untitled trailer they have purchased, then why can't the actual owner get a title before he sells it? It makes a lot more sense to me that way.
Personally I would be very leery of the background of a trailer that has no title. I can certainly see the possibility of the VIN coming up as stolen when you go to register it.

My point exactly, but not before you pay for it and bring it home.

Many people don't want to be bothered, even if it means only getting a fraction of the amount they would get if it had a title. When I look at a trailer with no title, I call the local police non emergency number to verify it hasn't been reported stolen.

Plate?
Does the trailer still have the old license plate on it? If so you may be able to back trace it. In some states there are ways to get it done. Look for lucymcdog's thread titled "Colorado title" it may give you some insite.
