1983 Airstream Motorhome Make "PAC" on title?

Hey Folks,

I recently purchased this 1983 Airstream 310 and am preparing the paperwork for getting it registered in Florida, but I'm a bit lost on this and searching here and google hasn't turned up anything too helpful.

I understand that there are two VINs and that the vehicle should be registered using the AS/Body VIN but someone seems to have gone with the wrong one at some point. The one and only title the sellers have corresponds to the chassis VIN (starts with 1GBKP3), not the Airstream one. On top of that it is listed as a 1982 and the Make is listed as "PAC" with no model specified...

I was curious if anyone had encountered a similar issue and how it was dealt with.

Among other things my concern would be whether documents such as the Insurance and Bill of sale should correspond to a 1982 PAC (and what the heck PAC is short for, google gives me nothing) or if I can just use the Chassis VIN and note the year and model as 1983 Airstream 310 since that's obviously what it is...

Thanks!

My 84 Excella 270 (On a 83 P30 chassis) has both vin numbers and when it was register by the previous owner, they used the wrong vin number, that made it a pain in the butt to register in NY.
Check your numbers and research online and you will find that the Chassis vin is NOT the one to use, use the Airstream vin and you will be good to go

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of.

Now to figure out how on earth to get it corrected when the sellers have already cancelled their tags and I'm guessing I won't be able to register the vehicle when the info in the title doesn't make sense...

I'll report back on the results so this thread is useful in case someone looks this up in the future.

To correct mine, I took photos of both vin plates and decoded them. One of them has a code that shows an incomplete vehicle (The Chevy P30 vin) The other shows the Airstream vin which should be the one to use. I brought the photos and the decoding chart to DMV and they did the correction to the right vin. I cant find the charts I used, I am sure they are online somewhere.
My chassis vin starts with this: 1A9DGAL27EJ0
The AS vin starts with this: 1GBKP37W9D3

Both Bella and Peanut are registered on the chassis (GMC) VIN, and in the case of Bella had to go to inspection center for RMV in MA to verify the chassis number was the same as the previous Title. In the UK Bella is also registered by VIN as that gives all the relevant information about chassis/engine, load carrying capacity etc; none of that is recorded by Airstream or part of the Airstream VIN. In my mind it is the chassis VIN that relates to registration details and gives traceability back to manufacturer....Airstream just built a coach body on the original chassis, and the Airstream VIN isn't recorded anywhere on the Title.

You are correct, I have the numbers reversed the AS number begins with 1A9 the GM is the 1GBK and that is what is on my title, the PO had the 1A9 on his title and that was not correct.
I found the vin chart for AS & GM and attached them.

The chassis VIN is the one to use.

Thanks so much guys, you're life savers!

So with the VIN good as is, what do you have for the year, model, and make? My chassis is 82 whereas the body is 83 and I would guess it should be registered as an airstream 310 not gmc p30 so the insurance and registration match up.

Thanks!

Even with the GMC VIN it is still titled and insured as an Airstream. The only issue is the year of manufacture is the GMC VIN. In most cases it doesn't matter (for example both our motorhome have the same year on GMC and Argosy VIN), but if they are different the titled year of manufacture will match the GMC VIN.

The Airstream year or manufacturer is not important as you will also have a 'model' for example the 2018 model trailers are available in mid-2017.....I wouldn't worry! All the Airstream VIN does is tell you the model, length and configuration.

Whenever looking for mechanical parts you are always searching with the GMC VIN.

My chassis was a 83, AS vin is 84 I registered mine as a 84 Airstream. For color they show grey, which is an insult, but who can argue with DMV?

They can't call it aluminum color because aluminum is an element, not a color. Using that same reasoning, my wife's gold Lexus would be named "yellow".

I think Silver is a more reasonable color than grey.

To give a quick update, after lots of phone calls and trips to the DMV, the folks in Florida's stance is that there is no way to fix the title on their end so I ended up having to do a VIN correction through the sellers in Colorado.

If everything goes according to plan the sellers will receive the title in a few weeks which they can finally sign over to me and I can get it registered as if this had never happened.
