Ontario Insurance Question

Hello,

I have a brand new 23' Safari FB SE and I'm looking to explore some insurance options for it. I live close to downtown Toronto, and I don't have the space to store it on my property. I'm keeping it in Milton now, while I search for a safe storage option closer to Toronto.

My present insurance company, Johnson (Unifund) is asking $1100 per year for coverage.

Here is where my confusion comes in. I have inquiries out to my insurance agent, and I'm waiting for clarification... I thought that it wouldn't hurt to get some impartial advice on here as well. :-)

It would seem that my comprehensive coverage on the Airstream is only in play when I am actually towing it. In storage, it appears that I have theft and fire coverage. However, I'm more concerned about vandalism while it's in storage. It's far more likely that some kid with spray paint it, or smash a window than it is that the trailer would be stolen.

Does anyone know more about the various insurance options?

The type of coverage I have, and the cost directly effects where I store it. If it is too costly to get full time comprehensive coverage year round, I am more likely to store it further away from the city where vandalism is less likely.

I live in Ontario and used to practice in the London area as an insurance adjuster.
I'd suggest, from my own experience that you have a talk with somebody like Wayfarer Insurance of Beaverton. They specialize in insuring RV's. I insure my 74 International with them and I've had one claim (when I kissed a barrier with the side of my trailer) and they were prompt and fair with me.
Coverage:
I bought All perils coverage for the unit, which covers damage to the unit for any reason (there are a few minor exceptions and wear and tear are not included). The policy also covers $1000 for an outbuilding ( I park it in a conservation area and have a tool shed), another $800 for the trailer's contents, (dishes, bedding, TV, binoculars, bird books etc), and $1000 for vacation expense (sitting in a motel while they fix your damaged darling).
The premium for this is based on the value of the trailer --- so much per $1000. Get a replacement quote from CanAm and send that in with the rest of the information they will ask for. On my $8000.00 International the premium was $120.00

Also, as your broker has probably told you, loss due to liability arising out of the use of the trailer, only is covered on your auto (puller) policy when you are attached to the trailer. When it is sitting in the driveway, or in the trailer park, and someone falls down the steps and injures themselves, you need Comprehensive personal liability to cover the defense of actions arising out of that circumstance and any judgment made against you. I bought $1,000,000. I also got $5000 voluntary medical coverage and $1000 voluntary property damage coverage in that package. The voluntary medical coverage lets you help the victim out, without regard to liability, for up to $5000 medical expenses, and $1000 property damage expense. So you can pay his medical expense for his skinned knees, and bloodied kilt and get your expenditure back from the insurer. This coverage is really inexpensive. In my case it was $20.00

I also have Wayfarers Insurance. They are really good to deal with.
As for storage, check out Safe Self Storage on Winston Churchill just north of the 401 highway 407 area. That is where I keep my trailer. It seems to me to be a very safe and secure compound.

I will be taking delivery of our International 27FB in Feb. Starting to do the research now on what Insurance companies folks particularly in Ontario might recommend and who to stay away from based on perhaps a negative experience.

I noticed in the thread above from 2008 that Wayfarer is a good company to deal with who might they compete with for RV specialized coverage under tow and when just sitting in your driveway.

Any information as always is kindly appreciated.

Hi Toronto Guy and Mifair. I would like to suggest calling M.B. Kouri Insurasnce Brokers Ltd. Ask for Mike Kouri. They are campground and trailer specialists. They insure 100's of campgrounds and thuosands of trailers. They insure my campground and several of the trailers in it. A lot of my campers have switched to them and saved a lot of money. I also save about 20% and got more coverage when I switched.

Cant answer your specific question - but in light of it, I will be looking at my own policy!

Here's something else though ................

When we got our AS, I was particularly concerned to be sure that we had coverage for hail damage. The agent I was dealing with ensured me that I would have, so I bought the insurance.

However, when the actual policy arrived - a couple of months later - the fine print confirmed that I had insurance against hail damage all right, provided the hail caused perforation!

Sounds like sharp practice to me!

So in the end, I changed insurance companies to ensure I had coverage against cosmetic damage from hail - cost me more $$ but I feel more comfortable with it. especially with our design of trailer.

We have our insurance at present with Aviva Elite, which happens to be the same company deal with for my motorcycle.

Our TT is on our Home-owner's Policy, and costs us peanuts (meaning I don't remember how much, but it's cheap).

Ask your agent about that, and get him to give you the info on what that covers. After all, that's his job, right?
