New Airstream Insurance

I just got a quote from Progressive Insurance for my new 25' International CCD. Although the unit has not been delivered, Progressive was able to provide me with a full quotation.

Please bear in mind that my driving record is perfect and I am a homeowner. If anyone could lend some insight to the quote and what they have found, I would appreciate it.

I should mention that my quote is based on the fact that if there is a complete loss, I would receive a total pay out of exactly what was spent on the unit when purchased new. This quote is NOT for the value of the unit at the time of accident.

Value Insured - $38,000
Comprehensive - $250 deductible with full glass
Collision - $250 deductible
Vacation Liability - $10,000
Personal Items - $5,000

The quote for 12 months was $1,217

This seems reasonable to me, but being that I have never shopped for RV insurance before, I don't know what would be considered a good price.

Is there any other insurance companies that you would reccomend I check out?

AAA of Southern California quoted me $376 to insure a 2004 34' Classic. Quote was for $60K new .. but I'm paying less than that.

$500 Deductible ... I didn't check about the value or replacement figure if there is an accident. Probably value only ... but I will take my chances at that price.

For $23 they'll add a roadside RV service plan.

we just got the same AS, do not own a house and because of two accidents the driving record is far from perfect.

We insured it for $46,624 with the same conditions Progressive offered you but pay $1,155.50. Maybe you'd like to give our Insurance co. a call andd get a free estimate. They do that fairly quickly over the phone and cover all states.

Farmers Insurance charges us $267 a year; the trailer is a "rider" on the Expedition policy.... it seems to be ???? $500 deductible on property damage.....

I have no idea what they would pay for a "total" loss.

Our car insurance offered us that possibility and the payment in case of total loss was "Blue book value"!! A good $20,000 below!

I would check into that, especially since your unit is still new.

I was considering adding the trailer on as a "rider" but then was told privately by another forum member, that it could hurt having the trailer associated with the auto policy.

I guess, the thinking is that if something were to ever happen to the Airstream, you risk the chance of also having your auto insurance go up as well.

I think it's something that I need to look into and figure out which is the best way to go.

We were able to get the 72 argosy covered under our auto policy with geico for a very nominal fee. They tacked it on the tow vehicle insurance. I'll ask Terry exactly what it was, but it only raised the payment about 10.00 per month. And they insured it for about 5,000.

You are right....I had better check on this situation--blue book value...

It seems to me that my $49,500 trailer (actually 52,000 with tax and registration for year one) is worth about $25,000 right now.

I am not certain I could actually get that much for it. Maybe blue book value doesn't seem too bad.

It seems to me now--hind site is always better--that I could get a good used Airstream (90's) for about 25,000, right?

You probably are right that the blue book is about $25,000 for an Airstream which is similarly equipped to yours, but the problem is that you have to find one for $25,000.

If you do a comprehensive search for Airtsream's for sale that were built in the last decade, they are not overly abundant. In addition, it would probably be hard to find one that has the exact features that you want.

I am one who would rather have a new unit and be able to have it for the future. Either way, you can't go wrong.

Just so you know, a claim is a claim is a claim. My ins. company said Insurance companies will check for claims, and your trailer is considered a vehicle, so it would cause an effect on your auto insurance whether it was on your automobile policy or separate. We got our insurance through our auto insurance carrier, got an additional multi-vehicle discount, $500.00 deductible, $125,000 additional liability, theft, comp, collision, loss of use, yada yada...Insured the trailer for $5,000, premium is $26.33 for six months. They told me that a trailer that old would be "actual value" at time of accident, so save my reciepts for any work to improve the trailer. Also to take photos to document the condition of the trailer, both common sense pieces of advice.
They are also supposed to get beck with me about a "replacement value" policy, I will let you all know how that turns out.

You might also check Foremost. My current policy on my Safari will replace the trailer if totaled for the first 5 years. The next 5 years after that its guaranteed reimbursement up to the original cost of the trailer.

I have checked with Foremost and have gotten a very good rate with them. I also like the fact that they offer full replacement value over the first 5 years and then reimbursement for the next 5 years.

I am going to do a little more research and then make my final decision.

Josh, for comparison (similar driving record and a homeowner as well), State Farm charges me $400 and some change for 12 months for the Bambi which was $30k retail new of course payout is value at the time of loss....

I may call today if I am feeling better to see what Foremost and State Farm can do for me...

$1200 sounds very high....

I have started to receive some other quotes that are substantially lower.

I guess I fell for the advertising. It's a good thing that I didn't but the policy.

After speaking with our car insurance guy again, he explained to us that what you ensure your trailer for (value) is what they base your premium on NOT - and sometimes not even close - to what they will pay you in case of replacement!

Then again here in NJ we have a total mess when it comes to insurance of any kind!!

We have the 5 year replacement option on our AS policy. It makes us feel safer.
I guess that for an older trailer it's OK to put it with your car but for a newer one...I'd highly reccomend you to get full coverage! Better safe than sorry.

Anyone knows if Foremost insures NJ? Have the tel# handy?

I have my 2002 Safari insured with RV Alliance America out of Bellevue, WA . I am paying less than $600 per year and they offer the Total Loss Replacement, Agreed Value, and Disappearing Deductibles. I realize that insurance rates vary by location and North Dakota is probably cheaper than other parts of the country but it is worth getting a quote from them.

Yes, I have Foremost on my motorcycle. There # is 1-800-532-4221. Please let me know how you make out. We are looking to get insures for our 25B Safari in Jan 04.

I ended up with a Foremost policy and was pleased with the rate. I compared Foremost to all of the other insurance carriers and Foremost was one of the few companies that was willing to offer a Total Replacement policy.

I started a new Forum...Thread (under Community) for RV Insurance - Fulltimers & Snowbirds. I hadn't seen this yet. I did a search that I thought was pretty thorough...and if you want to have me delete the one I started above...let me know. You guys have come up with a lot of good information...it's just that it may not be titled well enough Josh.

I have friends in Santa Rosa, in Cotati...in Redwood City, and San Carlos, up in Clear Lake, and even in Stockton. Please feel free to PM me for me to contact any of these. & Josh, would you please read my insurance concerns in that beginning post of my thread...and tell me if Foremost has covered those. Like, what $amount did you get on the contents of your coach?
And,,,when you say "total replacement",,,is this YOUR replacement...? you know, like the improvements (after-market) you've made? Like with pictures and receipts for proof?
