insurance?

Who's got insurance on their trailer and what can you tell me about it?

I tried to add the trailer's insurance to our Volvo's policy (State Farm) and they said they couldn't give us liability coverage because they don't insure the car we tow it with (which is our truck). Our commercial insurance company for the truck is The Hartford, but we don't use the trailer for commercial use.

Am I screwed? Should I just get coverage for damage to the trailer and not liability?

Any advice at all?

My insurance carrier is Farmers. They cover the trailer with an add-on to my auto policy (for something like $50/year), even though I tow with my company car. They say that I am covered.

Check out Foremost or Progressive. Both have some pretty good packages for trailers.

Ingrid, we have Farmers as well. When the trailer is in tow, it is covered by our policy through our pickup, as they consider it cargo regardless if it is carried or towed. When the trailer is parked at home, its considered personnel property. I don't know if you can work with your current carrier, regarding your pickup being covered for commercial, versus personnel use, that would then, enable the ability to cover the trailer. Jeff
( maybe consider the trailer as a mobile office? )

WE use state farm. The wrote a seperate policy for the trailer. They wrote it to stipulate a set repalcement cost (kinda like a vintage car policy) that we named. No probs to date.

Let's have a polishing party: I'll supply the trailer and buffing supplies. BYOB (bring your own buffer)

We also use State Farm with a seperate policy on the trailer so it is covered even if we pull it with the company vehicle. So far no problems

hmmmm

I wonder why they didn't give me that option (separate policy)? Maybe they didn't want to give me liability on it, with it attached to the car policy, but will give me a separate policy on it.

I think I'll try that.

*note* just called, and they're going to call back with a quote. I'm happy. Thanks all, I am intimidated by insurance companies and didn't want to call back and you gave me the spine to do it!

i.
