Replacement Insurance

jdh350,

Just noticed your question about replacement insurance while looking for an answer to another question. I also have my 2003 Airstream Motor Home with GMAC/Camping World. My policy shows that I am paying for replacement coverage. I just added an 1995 Airstream B190 - they would not do replacement on it saying it was to old and would only qualify for agreed value.
I asked for a quote with all other coverage the same as the 2003. I just got the policy and bill today and it is now twice what they quoted and higher than the insurance on the 2003. The reason - the van conversion was older and parts to repair more expensive and that bodily injury was higher since the van was more dangerous. I am going to look into this further depending on which vehicle I settle in with. I would have liked to have combined everything with my homeowners and auto at Allstate, but my agent (also an RV'er) says they can't compete on the rate. I went with him since he is a neighbor, friend and I like doing business locally. May have to reconsider based on what I am reading here with all the State Farm recommendations... anyway, he's now retired, so no money out of his pocket.

We've had various companies over the years. Over time some companies get better and some get worse. In different states, they can be different depending on whether the state regulates prices and coverage very much.

Progressive does not cover houses in Colorado, but gives a discount if you own a house. It was so much more reasonable, it was worth it to split coverage between vehicles and house. When my wife backed into a neighbor's car in our driveway (I remind her of that as much as possible), Progressive was pretty easy to deal with and our neighbor's car got fixed very well. Of course, we're paying for it in the premiums now giving me another opportunity to remind Barb. Since we own a log house, it's hard to get insurance for it and the best deal we could find was Farmer's even though we believe that company has gone down hill over the years. The Farmer's premium keeps going up fast. I see a lot of people like State Farm, but be aware that over the years State Farm has been sued a number of times for not paying claims; perhaps they have changed their approach.

How did you insure the 67'? We have State Farm too and have for the past 30 years...Same guy....great man. I called his office and was told State Farm (or their books) didn't go back that far. Only to like 86'. Did you insure it in a special category?

It's not often that you get the best service and the cheapest price from the same company!

I just switched to State Farm from Liberty Mutual. Saved a bunch of money. SF had no problem insuring my 77 Minuet or the 63 Globetrotter (which has not yet been restored). However, it could vary by state.

We insure all three (truck, B van, Airstream) with Geico. We also have the ERS coverage for the truck and van, which includes towing. I got our new policy in the mail today, and it shows the ERS being about $11 per vehicle per 6 month period. The Airstream is insured for $10,00 with the understanding if something happens to it I will have to prove we have that much money invested in it (not a problem, I have the $11,000+ in parts receipts).

We have our auto policy through Va Farm Bureau. I called and they added complete coverage on our Airstream also. I have had great service with them since the early 80's.

How about that $9.92 per policy Florida Hurricane Disaster Fund that everybody in Florida now has to pay to bail out the insurance companies?

Don't blame State Farm or other insurance companies for what's going on in FL. It's politics at its worst. State Farm asked for a rate increase (a big one) but the governor wouldn't allow it. Insurance companies aren't charities -- they are in business like everyone else and need to make a profit. State Farm can't operate at a loss forever. Price controls don't work -- they lead to shortages. Now there's a shortage of insurance in FL. Thank your governor. Let the market work. And no, I'm not with State Farm, just know a little something about the insurance business.

I routinely shop my insurance coverage / price to make sure I have the right mix of coverage at the right price. We have our AS with Progressive and everything else with another company (New Jersey Manufacturers). Progressive is hard to beat for the price, and I feel confident that we would get good service if we ever needed to file a claim.

I have had a few claims with Progressive -- never a claim on my policy, but I have been in two accidents that were not my fault and the other insurance was Progressive - super fast response, and no argument about taking my car to the dealer for repair.

Hope this helps...

Geico

I concur on Geico - I have all three vehicles and my '66 Caravel with them - and as I pour money into the Caravel they asked me to keep my receipts to show the added value - but the coverage is very inexpensive

We have insurance with Farm Bureau of Georgia. Never lived on a farm, though.

I have had insurance with them for 23 years and have been very, very satisfied so far. When my wife and I got married 20 years ago, they were cheaper than my wife's insurance company, State Farm. This of course will probably vary from state to state and the fact that we live in a highly metropolitan area. Smaller cities might be less.

The company I'd avoid

I've had American Family for 30+ years and have no problems. Every company is nice until you file a claim. I filed one weather related claim about 10 years ago and it was handled quickly and fairly through American Family.

I would, however, avoid The Hartford. Last summer I was rear-ended at a stoplight while sitting on my motorcycle. No serious injuries, got a police report, etc. After a week of not being able to contact the other driver, I got a copy of the report and called her insurance company-The Hartford.

Hartford maintained that they "might" be liable if the insured contacted them but that she had not yet contacted them. They suggested waiting until she had the occasion to contact them and then we could "talk about it".

I then had the occasion to send a certified letter to the Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions, and Professional Registration. After about 5 days the Hartford suddenly decided that they would file a claim for me and try to find their insured another time.

I think insurance companies are a lot like Las Vegas casinos in that they don't build those multi-story glass and chrome buildings by giving money back to the customers.

Insurance delusions

Insurance, health, auto, rv, life, etc have become one large financial ripoff merygoround.........I have been trying to learn how to insure ones RV...to get a "full timers" policy, one would say......If one has insurance on the tow vehicle and pulling trailer down the road...then trailer is covered under tv's insurance.....unhook the trailer and you have no insurance...or tell the insurance company you are a "full timer" and you have no coverage....so one has to obtain a "full timers" policy for the RV...which is effectively a "homeowners" policy with gerneral libality and covers you when parked and also provides compresive coverage to repair or replace the trailer at the stated purchas price......

so i have been dealing with AON which is now Poliseek...which pushes Progreswsive Direct...which offered the most economical coverage...as opposed to Foremost, at least....... Pray that the govertnment does not want to help the rv insurance area......s

any thoughts

Did you have to insure it under a "classic" coverage? We have had our insurance with State Farm for 30 years.. Same guy..when I called his office his secretary told me that they only insure back to 1979 or 1980.

What is meant by complete insurance coverage?

I have been attempting to find out how to get coverage for anything that might happen, such as somebody falling down the steps, when I have the Airstream parked at a campsite, unhooked from the tow vehicle. Does anybody have this type of insurance. I'd suggest you check with your carrier to see if this is covered, you might just think you have it. I have all my insurance through GEICO, namely, vehicles, home, and umbrella. I've called department after department. I cannot seem to get a straight answer. Does anybody have this kind of insurance? Any suggestions?

I have an "umbrella policy" with State Farm. It is a general liability policy that covers anything that could be considered my fault. They explained that if I was walking down the street and stuck someone in the eye with my umbrella, it would be covered. Everyone one should have something like this. Good Luck.

Uh, is this why they call them "Umbrella Policies"?

Welcome to the group MikeAir.
Probably what you are looking for is the coverage "Pleasure use Vacation Liability Coverage" Check with your carrier but it would cover such things as bodily injury and property damage. If someone fell off your steps, you would be covered. If you are parked and unhooked from your TV, awning blows off and damages the trailer next to you, you would be covered.
Limits vary but is fairly reasonable. Should be offered with any RV Physical damage policy.
Hope this helps, again welcome and good luck on your search.
