Any PROS/CONS GMAC Insurance?

I have discovered there would be significant savings in auto coverage by switching from State Farm, whom I've been with for many years and has been very good with past claims, to GMAC insurance.

I have not yet asked if homeowners, marine or AS coverage is available.

Does anyone have experience with GMAC? Good, bad or ugly.

I have found it is smart to shop yearly for auto insurance. I have used most of the major companys including GMAC. GECO, and others. The industry is huge and the competition between the companys is also huge. Stay with a major company and shope each year - You will save money with about the same service.

I am requesting commentary on actual experiences members may have had with GMAC.

I have Good Sam's Insurance which is written by GMAC, and all my paperwork has GMAC on it. I'm sure the Good Sam's gets a kickback or we get a 1% discount or something, and they get the benefit of a major organization recommending their company. Anyway, I have not had an accident in a car, automobile, motorcycle, motorhome, etc since I was 17 that was my fault. I've had one accident 33 years ago that was not my fault. My wife hasn't had an accident in many years, don't know how long. I do not have a bad driving record(tickets) although, I did get caught in a speed trap 3 years ago, doing a whopping 55 in a 45 zone on a major state hiway. Now, all the history done, I scratched an Airstream two years ago, by putting my awning arm against a tree, tearing it loose, all the while not knowing it, and scratching the side. Well, I used the insurance to fix it as I have paid it 40 years and thought I should get my money out of it. Wrong! My insurance premiums went totally out of sight this past year. When I called to check on it, I was told I am a risky driver. A ticket and an 'accident' on my record. They should get their money back in the next 3 years. I'll bet the premiums don't go down when the three years is over. Although they paid without a BIG fuss, just a little one, I will be shopping prior to renewal.

Ike, GMAC is o.k. if you don't need collision. They won't cover the classic motorhome over 20 years old. Let me know if the trailer is covered behind your TV with them please.

Yes, Glen, it is. There are a few things that you need to pay extra for, such as fire , theft, etc while parked.
Something that has always amazed me, no matter if there is only two drivers in a family, they charge much more for each item you add even though the two people could not possibly drive more than two things at once. I wonder if anyone could help me with that?

Hi, Too much $$$$$$$$$$$ I just got a new quote at Camping World: The nice lady wanted to do it even though I told her they are way to high. [GMAC] She came up with a quote of $744.00 for six months coverage. I pay AAA $270.00 per year. Do the math. They do have more bells and whistles, but not worth the difference to me. She also told me that her computer would not accept my Airstream trailer as a travel trailer; She had to enter it in a separate group called "Airstream".

That tends to be the issue when you've been with a carrier for years and they get to know you vs, starting with a new company. State Farm for the Suburban for example is something like $500/yr for 100/300/100 and a $500 deduct. Called around every so often and when I do, I get crazy quotes for $900/yr, $1200 year, etc (with no accidents, great driving record, etc)...Airstream is the same way, as are the rest of the "fleet", house, etc. It's to the point where I can't go anyplace else and pay as little as I do now with the same coverages.

Silvertwinkie, are you sure that's not the rate for just 6 mos? Our coverage is the same as yours but $590.33/6 mos. I'd think living in Chicago the premiums would be much higher than ours - not the other way around. However, we do have to drive a distance to get anywhere we want to go.
15 mi. to the bank or groceries (my favorite store is 32 mi.) oneway. That's still a huge diff. in premiums ...... obscene actually.

We've used Farmers for years on our home and three automobiles and they provide comp/collision for our '04 Classic under a special "Auto Homes Endorsement" for only $16.80 per year. The deductible is $1,000.

Steelbird, the coverage is refered to as "stacked" and it is safe to assume that you only have so many seats for so many .... bottoms. If you think they are taking advantage do as many others suggest and go shopping for rates. I'm not certain how your TV / trailer / other toys work on stacked coverage as it's always been my experience with only driven units.

Hi Suz....yes, as a matter of fact I just got my renewal bill from State Farm and ironically a GMAC Insurance letter in the mail at the same time.

I'll PM you specifics, but yes, it's not far from what I've claimed above.

Thanks to this forum I went inquire about insuring my 70 overlander yesterday. 2 years ago I went to camping world and they told me they did not insure old TT. This morning I paid Nationwide $32.20 for 6 months insurance. They quoted me $16.30 yesterday but that was bare minimum.
Today,the value was established at $7000, added comprehensive $50 glass, collision $100 deductible, personal effects $2000 (covers laptop/camera/led TV/etc).
My old Suburban cost me $178 for 6 months for 50/100/300 coverage.
I check every 3 years for cheaper price. Let me know if you know a good rated company with cheaper rate.
